The story is told, and I'm writing from my poor memory, that a gifted rabbi who was a disciple of some sort of Rabbi Yisroel Salanter (the founder of the Mussar Movement - M&M) was approached by RYS who asked him to tutor his (RYS's) son every day (I don't remember for how long) and in return RYS said he would learn with this fellow for an hour a week. This gifted rabbi thought it over and decided against, for he did not want to forfeit so much of his time tutoring a child when he could be studying Torah on a much higher level. Later in life he expressed deep regret, because he began to realize that one hour with RYS giving him personal attention could have completely put him in touch with a higher destiny.
Now someone of the caliber of RYS, it may be safe to assume that he conducted his affairs in the concept of "vihulachtu <and you should go> bidruchuv <in His ways>" emulating the ways of Hashem Yisburach, as we are commanded in the Torah, and further exhorted in the holy words of the Sages. Therefore from this story we can ascertain that RYS understood that this is a primary way of Hashem Yisburach - that people dedicate themselves to holy endeavors and in return Hashem Yisburach graces them with an occasional "hour" of Divine attention. May we merit!!!!
Na Nach Nachma Nachman MeUman!
