Rabbainu revealed that in order for a person to rise to a higher level he first must undergo a descent and fall.
It seems to me that there is a possible way of avoiding this falling, and that is by truly empathizing with the fallen souls and really feeling their predicament, by this one can accomplish the necessary descent that was incumbent for his further ascent.
This method I have termed in the tags, piggybacking...
Thus e.g. Rabbainu revealed that the way of Moshe in Elul - a time of great ascent - was to bind himself to the very lowest and execrible of Israel.
