Pray
With Your Limbs
Introduction
Rabbi
Nachman commanded one of his greatest adherents [R' Shmuel Eyezik
o.b.m.], in the youth of this adherent, that during hisbodidus he
should speak copiously to each of the limbs of his body individually,
and he should explain to them that all the desires of the body are
vain, for behold the end of every person is death, and the body is
brought to burial, and all the limbs will rot and decompose etc., and
more words such as these. And he (R' Shmuel Eyezik) practiced this
for some time. And afterwards he spoke with Rabbainu o.b.m. and he
apologized before him, as his body doesn't hear and feel whatsoever
all his words and argumentation with it. Rabbainu o.b.m. said to him,
“Be strong in this matter, and do not let up from this, and you
will see afterwards what will be with these words.”
And
he (R' Shmuel Eyezik) heeded Rabbi Nachman's advice, and fulfilled
his words, until he merited afterwards, that every single limb that
he spoke to individually, was drawn after his words so much, to the
extent that mamash (-actually) all the life would leave the
limb he was speaking with, and remained with out any vitality or
sensation. And this he saw empirically in his external limbs such as
his fingers and toes and so forth, until he began to speak with his
inner organs which are vital, such as the heart and so forth, he
needed to be very succinct in order that his life wouldn't expire
mamash, as mentioned.
And
I heard that once, this person spoke with those close to him about
how this world isn't anything, and what is the tachlis
(-purpose, end) of all the matters of the body etc. as mentioned
above, and in the middle of speaking he fainted and began to die (and
in Yiddish: he remained weak), and with ardent effort he revived and
returned to life. And he said then that he merited through the
holiness of Rabbainu o.b.m. to this (spiritual) level that whenever
he reminds himself well of the fear of (Heavenly) retribution and the
end and the tachlis of all the matters of this world, then all
his limbs, even the smallest of his toes, feel mamash like
they are already lying (in the grave) and rotting etc., to the extent
that he needs to greatly bolster himself to retain his life inside of
him, (so) that his soul does not depart mamash, as mentioned
above.
And
I heard in the name of Rabbainu o.b.m. that he said to several other
people as well, “Because your body is very coarse and strong with
desires, therefore darft eer <you must> un dulen
<badger/burden/exhaust> with holy words regarding the tachlis.”
And accordingly it is understood that it is also necessary to speak
with oneself at great length in the matter of encouragement, so that
he shouldn't abate completely, Heaven forbid. (Life of Rabbi
Nachman, articles 442-3).
In
addition Sefer Chasidim (article 155) writes: There was once a
chassid who would bless (Gd) over each and every limb, and the verse
supports him (Psalms 84), “My heart and my flesh will sing praise
to the living G-d,” and it is written (Psalm 35), “All my limbs
will say, 'Hashem, who resembles You?'.” And he would pray over all
the limbs that he was created with, that they should serve (He) Who
created them, for His honor, and that he shouldn't sin against Him
with them, for the Holy One Blessed He puts in the hearts of the
good, not to sin against Him, that no sin is brought about through
them, as it says (Proverbs 12), “There will not occur to a tzaddik
(-righteous person) any iniquity.”
[Also
see the Zohar (Shlach - Numbers 175b, various verses that are
proclaimed in accordance to the initiation of different body
functions, and of course the daily morning blessings.]
Therefore
I have undertaken to prepare words for Hashem Yisburach correlating
all the limbs. The reader will see that this is a mere beginning, and
will add so forth and so forth as he desires. In general I have
assembled different characteristics and attributes of the different
limbs and parts of the body, often Kabalistic, and often from the
revelations of Rabbi Nachman, introducing them in prayer form,
requesting of Hashem Yisburach to see their complete manifestation,
however this is not the original basic engagement set forth by Rabbi
Nachman. The main concept is to repeatedly drill into the limbs the
awareness of their ephemeral existence in this world, and their
purpose in this world to serve Hashem Yisburach. This should be one's
main project. Because this is very difficult, to constantly repeat
oneself, and to so over and over again to each limb, B.H. I have
developed the construct by merging it with another fundamental of
Rabbi Nachman, making prayers from Toroas (-holy teachings), in this
way a person has the expanse of heart to keep up strong prayers over
each limb, and also gain new incentives, goals, aspirations, in his
quest for holiness and closeness to Hashem Yisburach. However with
this added construct comes danger. For when a person sets out with
these prayers to merit the tachlis (-ultimate purpose), to be a
miniature Temple, a merkava (seat) for the Shechina (Divine
Presence), and whomsoever truly desires and is intent on meriting
this is ascertained that from Heaven they will help him, and they
will begin to refine him and purify him as is proper and befitting,
and according to the state he is in this will entail huge tikunim
(-rectifications – this connotes upheavals and the like) including
all types of harships and suffering G.f. not upon us. This I heard as
well, in the name of Saba Yisroel who explained to the friends around
him at that time, that they should be cautious of what they asked
for, as explained above. [Also see Siach Sarfey Koadesh (vol. 2
article 632), Rabbi Nussun told them, “You are the way you are, and
you desire to draw close to a Rebbe so great and awesome as this?!”
therefore they undergo everything, see there]. Furthermore, the more
one arouses the koal (call/voice/sound) of holiness, there is an
arousal of koal (call) of the sitra achra (realm of evil) as is
explained in Likutay Moharan (Torah 22). And other similar concerns,
which here is not the place to list them. Therefore, just someone who
is utterly sick and tired of the vain life of this world, and
sorrowfully has nothing to lose, should put his soul in hands, and
supplicate, and plead over each and every limb to achieve its tachlis
(ultimate purpose), and he should be prepared to accept with love
what Hashem Yisburach will demand of him, and through humility and
da'as (- holy realization of knowledge)he will will be protected from
all harm and pain of the suffering, hardships, and tikunim
(rectifications), with the help of Hashem Yisburach, and in the merit
of our holy master Na Nach Nachma Nachman MeUman!
Prologue
Many
of the words and prayers here are based on the correlation between
parts of the body and their counterparts in the holy Temple and the
entire creation, which parallel the 613 commandments; 248 positive
(the dos) commandments correlating the 248 limbs, and 365 negative
(don't dos) commandments correlating the 365 veins and arteries. This
is a basic fact presented in the introduction to the Tikunay Zohar
(page 12), and developed in Likutay Moharan (vol. 2, Torah 4), and in
many other holy places. In fact the prophet Jeremiah calls out three
times consecutively (7:4) “They are the Chamber of Hashem (YHVH),
the Chamber of Hashem, the Chamber of Hashem!” Even in non-chasidic
books this is an accepted fact that is meant to be understood and
developed, the Nefesh Hachaim (1:4) makes this very clear and
explains that this is what Hashem told Yichezkal (Chapter 43) to tell
the Children of Israel the blueprints of the Temple and its vessels
so that they would ashamed of their sins and so that they guard the
designs etc., because man is made in the same design, and by learning
the utter holiness of the design when it is in correct form and usage
one will be shamed by the state of his own form due to his sins. Thus
we see even from the Scriptures that it is critical for us to use the
designs of the Temple to emulate.
The
Sefer Yitzeerah (Book of Creation) lays out many correlations between
parts of the anatomy and different parts and facets of character
(nefesh), time (shunah - ziman), and creation (oalam - mukoam).
However there is no one reliable text, and thus there is no certainty
to the posits presented (usually in these cases I will go with the
version of the Vilna Goan – while editing this manuscript I once
again was confronted with the multitude of different versions, which
are way beyond the scope of this little work, and I almost opted out
of listing any, so know that the version or versions I do choose are
not necessarily the only ones, they may just represent one aspect or
paradigm, or one opinion, and might not even be the most convincing
or relevant). Even when there is an established position, it may very
well conflict other Kabalistic sources, which would probably mean
that there are more aspects and contingencies involved which are not
being presented. So sometimes it is necessary to bring various values
for a single limb.
However
I have yet to find a holy book that categorically reveals all the
correlations, so I was only able to employ the few instances I have
merited to learn about (here I was helped many times by the writing
of Rabbi Moshe Dovid Walli, an elder sage who studied by the
Ramchal). In addition, the Ramchal (Adir Bamurom, page 3) explains
that there are also special correlations regarding the quality and
extent of each part. The Ramchal points out that even the different
parts of the body themselves have great impact upon one another, as
can been seen for example, with a man who doesn't have testicles, his
voice will be weaker and he will be beardless (see also the
introduction to Character: The Aleph Beth Book of the Traits, how the
neighboring traits effect each other). So both the quantity and
quality are correlated. Although in my experience most people assume
that every one of the 613 commandments has a unique counterpart in
the 248-365 of the body, the Ramchal reveals that certain
commandments, like prayer, sacrifices, and tithes do not actually
pertain to any limbs but rather to their functioning. This might be
the reason that there is no readily available work that reveals all
the correlations. It also should be noted that Ramchal says that in
the mitzva of the bris (circumcision) there is an addition 613
paralleling all the 613, and this mitzva is a general mitzva equal
and significant as all the others together.
A
great deal of attention was given to the aspects, functions, and
purposes of the different parts of the body as revealed by Rabbi
Nachman of Breslov, sometimes very briefly and sometimes at length,
sometimes obscurely and sometimes openly and repeatedly. Of course it
would have been better had I noted the exact place I was drawing
from, but this was a collection over a long period of time, and often
came spontaneously from a memory crying out to be remembered and
sought out, and I didn't want to be hampered by the homework, so
unfortunately I will not be providing these sources.

With Your Limbs
{For
the sake of unifying the Holy Blessed One and His Divine Presence,
with fear and love, and love and fear, to unite Yud Kay (YH) with Vuv

C'huchma (wisdom) [NaChMaN], our leader Rabbainu Na Nach Nachma
Nachman MeUman in this devotion of speaking to my limbs and praying
with them and for them.}
Master
of the World, Holy Merciful One, please be with me to speak with all
my main limbs… and specifically with my BRAIN
[ש,
YHVH: all with kumutz – Kesser, all with patach – Chuchma, all
with tzairay – Beena. Higher Da'as: - 7 times 37 the fill in of the
elongation of YHVH to Sa.G. name of 63: VD Y AV Y. Lower Da'as: Y –
choalem, H – tzairay, V – kumutz, H - tzairay] that it should be
full of love of Hashem and fear of Hashem, completely abnegated to
the Ain Soaf [No Limited (the Infinite One)] Blessed He.
{My
brain, know that you are in this world for just a few years and then
you will rot in the grave, six feet under, the worms and maggots will
devour you, and nothing will be left of you. Now you are here and
well, for holiness and goodness……………………}
And
it should be holy and pure, a seat (keesay) for my Neshama (-the
third highest part of the soul), merit me to always see the saichel
(intellect/logic/reason) in everything (Lk”m 1). “Gi'ar (berate)
cha'yas kunneh (the wild beast that lives between the reeds)”
(Psalms 68:31. The Zohar (Pinchas 252) says this is breaking the left
leg (kunneh) of the letter Ches (cha'yas) making it into the letter
Hey, this is a rectification of the purity and focus of the intellect
see Likutay Moharan 5, 27, and 35 and elsewhere at length). And
banish, and remove, and purify my mind of all external wisdoms, and
desires, and bad thoughts, and alien considerations. And whenever
there is necessity, merit me to renew my mind in faith through
minimal sufficient sleep, or through the study of the simple
interpretation of the Torah, or through faithful engagement in
business, and the rest of the time my mind should toil striving for
divaikus (binding with Hashem) pursuing hasagas (conception of the)
Elluhous (Divine). (See Likutay Moharan, Torah 35). And merit me to
the missadehr (organizer) and mi'yashev (settler) of the moachin
(intellect) to restrain my intellect's all out pursuit of the Divine,
and as a result merit me to the attainment of the chambers created by
the reaching and not reaching (See Likutay Moharan Torah 24).
And
merit me to have minds lucid as silver, in the aspect of “shev
(sit) li'yi'meenee (to my right – the aspect of kindness –
silver),” through meriting me to repentance from love, the aspect
of “zehra (the progeny of) Avrohom (Abraham- aspect of kindness)
avdee (My servent).” And there should resonate from minds thunder,
to straighten the crookedness of my heart, and merit me to have a
straight heart, and a heart full of happiness, and kavana
(concentration/intention/focus) of the heart, and ruach hakoadesh
(Divine inspiration), and (with the thunder) to purify my hands and
the heavens, in order to merit the da'as (holy realization of
knowledge) of machlokis (conflict – opposing views) lishaim (for
the sake of) shuma'yim (Heaven), and to receive words from Heaven
from the thunder - “koal (calling) raamchu (Your thunder) bagalgal
(in the spherical hemisphere) (Psalms 77:19),” - “bagalgalta (in
the skull) di'moacha (the brains)” - in the pulse of my hands. And
merit me to have a free mind through happiness [This paragraph is
based on Likutay Moharan, Torah 5].
And
to produce my da'as (holy realization of knowledge) from bikoach
(potential) to the poa'el (actualization), and merit me to saichel
(intellect) hapoa'el (sheer, true, live, and actual), and to ahava
she'bidaas (the intellect's love – see Likutay Moharan, Torah 33).
And
merit me to know how everything in my life is alluded to in the Torah
of Rabbainu Na Nach Nachma Nachman MeUman.
Merit
me to know how to make a mishkal (-right amount) for the ruach
(spirit/wind) and to contain (/prepare) water in the proper
measurement (Job 28:25).
Merit
me to have da'as so that I can be “ne'eman ruach (faithful of/with
the spirit) michasse (covers up) duvur (the matter)” (Proverbs
11:13), and “lichalkel (put forth/ sustain) divureye (my words)
bimishpat (with exactitude/justice)” (Psalms 112:5), and I won't be
a fool who lets out all his spirit (Proverbs 29:11).
Merit
me to the da'as of the Door (generation of) Daya (knowledge – this
was the generation that accompanied Moses in the dessert, which
merited to special high levels of Divine Inspiration, equaled only to
a short period of the first Temple under the reign of King Solomon),
and to the da'as of nullification to the Ain Soaf blessed He. Merit
me to the da'as to be duvook (bound) to You 24/7 without break.
Merit
me to the da'as of “meebisuree (from my flesh) echzeh (I will see)
Eloaha (G-d)” (Job 29:26).
Merit
me that I never fall Heaven forbid from da'as to animalism, not even
for a moment, and merit me to have da'as so that I should be an adam
(man – see Likutay Moharan, vol. 2, Torah 4).
And
merit me that my mind should be holy with the strength and construct,
the aspect of the holy ark, and the loochoas (tablets of) habris (of
the covenant), and the menorah, so that they are worthy vessels for
Your holy Torah and Your Divinity.
And
merit me to shefa (bounty) Eloahee (Divine) through the purification
of the seven branches of the menorah; the eyes, ears, nose, and
mouth.
And

be full of love of Hashem and fear of Hashem, and they should be
completely abnegated to the Ain Soaf [No Limited (the Infinite One)]
Blessed He.

And
they should be holy and pure with the strength, and the holiness, and
the aspect of the blind beggar, who remembered nothing – for the
whole world didn't amount in his eyes to the blink of an eye, not to
look at this world at all, just to look at the pneemeeyus (internal),
the saichel (intellect/logic/reason), the good, hidden light, Your
G-dliness, that is in everything. Merit me to have yearning eyes for
this, and a yearning heart for this.
Merit

(stinginess – see Adir Bamuroam 322), and from forgetting, and from
foolishness of “moatzay deebah (slanderer) hoo (he is) kiseel (a
fool),” and from death of the heart. And merit me to have an eye'in
toav (good eye), toav eye'in (from the source in Erech Anpin), holy
memory, joy, the hand of the musician to select and gather the good
spirit from the bad spirit, and the broken spirit. And that
everything I see, I should be mechaven (have intention) the Name
Ba.N. (YHVH spelled out using, when applicable, just the letter Hay,
so that the numerical value is Ba.N. - 52) to raise it to the Name
Ma.H. (YHVH spelled out using Alephs, so that the numerical value is
Ma.H. - 45) of Oalam (World of) Hateekoon (the Rectification), and
higher holiness.
And
merit me to be yaneek (young, like a suckling) and wise. And merit me
to be prescient. And make my eyes holy with the strength, and the
holiness, and the aspect of the pure menorah, in the secret of
(Proverbs 18:10), “migdal <a tower> oaz <of might is the>
shem <name of> Hashem, boa <with (/in) it> yurootz <runs
the> tzaddik vinisgav <tzaddik, and is formidable>.” And
that I should draw my sight from the supernal forehead of rutzoan
(will, appeasement), and from the tefillin, and from the Temple, and
from the holy Sabbath, and from the tzaddik, and the four letters of
Havaya (-letters of YHVH in an order which is permitted to pronounce)
blessed He. And it should be fulfilled in me (Proverbs 4:25),

tehchehzehnu <will see> maishurim <straightforward>.”
And merit me to emuna (faith) and beetuchoan (trust). And merit me to
the eyes of Sabbath, to see my lowliness. And merit me to the eyes of
Hashem, that everywhere I look will be holy with the holiness of the
atmosphere of the Land of Israel, by meriting me to see the true
tzaddikim, and to see the hispaarus (splendor, bravado) of Israel, in
general, in particular, and in distinct particularity, - through
which I should merit to reveal rutzoan (will of) Hashem, His might,
and His splendor, and I will merit to ahavas (love of) Hashem, and
yiras (fear of) Hashem [and through this draw my intellect close to
the movement of the galgalim (planets), and to saichel hapoa'el
(active intellect), to Ma'tat.). “Gal <uncover> aineye <my
eyes> vi'abeetu <and I will see> niflu'oas <wanders>
bisoarusechu <in Your Torah>” (Psalms 119:18). And guard me
from looking outside of the four amoas (cubits) of halacha, so that
my eyes will be a mehrkava (seat) for the hashgachu (supervision)
elyoanu (supernal). And merit me to the aspect of eye'in toav (good
eye) – the one open eye of Ehrech Anpin (the Large Countenance).
And to fulfill “Low heebeet <he did not see> uven <iniquity>

And
they should be holy with the strength, and the holiness, and the
aspect of the Deaf Beggar, who didn't hear the deficiencies of this

holy land immediately. And merit me to the aspect of (Chabakuk 3:2),
“Hashem shumattee <I heard> shimachu <what You made heard>
yuraisee <and I had fear of Heaven>,” to hear Torah from the
tzaddik who heard it from Hashem Yisburach, and to merit to fear (of
Heaven) which is contingent (/derived) from the ears, and merit me to

(healthy)) kivsuroa (as his flesh),” (see Likutay Moharan, vol. 2,
Torah 83). And it should be holy with the strength, and the holiness,
and the aspect of the lofty Chashmal (this is the skin-protective
layer provided from the supernal countenance of Eema-Understanding),
the aspect of the ark of Moses, choamehr (white mortar) inside
[YHVH], and zefes (black tar) on the outside [ADNY]. And to reverse
(transform) the snake to “matteh” (staff-rod=54), subordinate
under the D”N (judgment=54) of ADNY. And to dress in Sabbath
clothing, that is, a holy body from Gan Eden (Garden of Eden). And
merit me to give life to the male letters, chairoos (freedom –
playing on the word “charoos”- carved) on the loochoas (the
Tablets of the Ten Commandments), ReY”V (216=3*72) of A”V (72),
the aspect of the three forefathers.
And
my CLOTHING should be holy, with the strength, and the holiness, and
the aspect of the skins of techushim (an animal that existed just at
the time of the exodus from Egypt, whose skin had many colors, and
was used as the top, most exterior, covering of the mishkan, over all
the 3 previously mentioned layers).
And
my HEELS should be full of love of Hashem and fear of Hashem, and
should be completely abnegated to the Ain Soaf [No Limited (the
Infinite One)] Blessed He.
{My
heels, know that you are in this world for just a few years and then
you will rot in the grave, six feet under, the worms and maggots will
devour you, and nothing will be left of you. Now you are here and
well, for holiness and goodness……………………}
And
they should be holy with the strength, and the holiness, and the
aspect of the musach (partition which stood at the entrance) of the
Mishkan (Tabernacle), which stood on five columns of sheeteem wood,
covered with gold, and their latches, gold, and their sockets,
bronze, the aspect of the five letters of Eloakim, and its 120
permutations.
And
my holy BRIS (circumcision-covenant) [א]
should be full of love of Hashem and fear of Hashem, and should be
completely abnegated to the Ain Soaf [No Limited (the Infinite One)]
Blessed He.
{My
holy bris, know that you are in this world for just a few years and
then you will rot in the grave, six feet under, the worms and maggots
will devour you, and nothing will be left of you. Now you are here
and well, for holiness and goodness……………………}
And
it should chaste, holy, and pure. And merit me to “teekoon klullee”
(general/comprehensive rectification), and it should be fulfilled by
me (Job 22:25), “Vihu-yu Shad”ay (and G-d – this Divine Name is
the attribute of Yesod-Foundation) bitzurechu (in your confines –
sending rectification to even the most narrow parts of your body\\as
your shelter),” and (Koheles 9:8), “Bichul <at all> ais
<times> yihi-yoo bigudechu <your clothes should be>
livunim <white>” - “bigeedecha” (in your blood vessels -
similar to “bigudechu”-clothing of the verse) livunim (white)”
(that is a rectification – a whitening of the blood), to pure all
of my 365 geedeem (blood vessels) from the blood of menstruation of
the bad maidservant, and to reverse (transform) “dahm” (blood) to
“doam” (silence, awaiting, hope with faith), “vi'shemen <and
oil (light...)> al <upon> roashchu <your head> loe
<will not> yechsar <be lacking> (end of the verse in
Koheles),” and I should merit to “noazleem <flowing down>
meen <from> livunoan <Lebanon?>” - “mee leevoona
(from the whiteness – similar to “meen livunoan” of the verse)
di'moacha (of the brain),” the drop of seed, the da'as (holy
realization of knowledge) of the tzaddik, which will provide for me
with ease, and I will be saved from the foolishness of laboring for a
livelihood.
{Here
would be appropriate to pray for marital issues}
Assay
<do> limaan <for the sake of> shimechu <Your Name>.
Assay limaan Yimeenechu <Your right hand>. Assay limaan
Toarusechu <Your Torah>. Assay limaan Kidooshusechu <Your
holiness>. “Limaan <in order> yaichultzoon <to free>
yideedechu <Your beloved> hoasheeyu <save> Yimeenechu
<with Your right hand> vi-anainee <and answer me>”
(Psalms 60:7, 108:7). {Here you can say the verse applicable to your
name}. “Yi-hi-yoo lirutzoan <they should be desirable> imray
<the words of> fee <my mouth> vihegyoan <and the
contemplations of> leebee <my heart> lifunechu <before
You> Hashem tzooree <my Rock> vigoa'alee <and my
Redeemer>” (Psalms 19:15).
