Blossoms of the Spring - Letter 27

Letter 27 (in some editions this is #25)

BH The night preceding the day of erev (the day preceding) Rosh Chodesh Eyar 719 (Tuesday night (In Judaism the day starts with night, so this is considered Wednesday), September 2, 1959), Tiberias.

The apple of my eye, who is engraved in my memory always, Mr. Z. Shazar, who grapples[1] and longs and craves to taste from the good life of the true Tzadik[2], who prepared tools for our righteous Messiah[3], and the Messiah will fight with them to rectify the world. His wellbeing and his success should shine for length of pleasant and invigorating days.

There is a true Tzadik who merits to live good life that do not have in them any deficiency, and he specifically, is called deaf because he doesn’t hear at all  any call/voice of this world, because all of the calling of this world, they are all of deficiencies, because everyone screams over their deficiencies, and even all the rejoicing of the world, it is just on account of the lacking, that one was deficient and it was filled up for him.

And by this deaf one, the whole entire world doesn’t amount to anything that he should hear their lacking, because he lives good life that do not have in them any lacking whatsoever, and the good life of his are bread and water, just that in the bread and water of his one can taste all the tastes, and all the aromas, and all the types of delights that there are in the world, so that the entire world can have through them truly good life.[4]

The fundament and the foundation that everything is contingent upon, (is) to bind oneself to the true Tzadik, and to accept his words, and to discard from oneself all the smarts, and to remove one’s wit as if he does not have any intellect other than what he receives from the Tzadik![5]

The true Tzadik is the aspect of Messiah, who (/in that he) engages always in the rectification of the souls of Israel to arouse them from their slumber through the good points that he finds in each one, and he shines in the heart of each one of Israel to search, and to seek, and to find in himself always good points in order to arouse him from his sleep and his fall, so that he doesn’t fall completely Heaven forbid. And most essentially, when the heaviness of sleep overwhelms the soul of an Israelite through his abundant sins and defections, to the extent that th will just about fall completely Heaven forbid, specifically then, he will inspire in him with his kindness, to arouse, and to strengthen (himself) to find his good point, to save him and to arouse him. And the redemption, in general and in particular, is contingent upon this![6] The drawing close to the Tzadik surmounts everything, and it is the aspect of the resurrection of the dead, because all that happens without purity is called by the term death, as it says )Yechezkel 18:4), “and the soul who sins [it (this word is missing from the quote)] shall die,” and the Tzadik resurrects the dead, because through him one merits to repentance, and the intentional sins are turned around into merits.

The entire devotional enterprise of the Tzadik is to reveal His Divinity to all who traverse the world, until the distant will all hear, and come, and convert, and they will draw close to Hashem Yisburach![7]

The Tzadik gathers and draws close all the lost and rejected who are (the ones that are) far from the Torah, who come to truly draw close to him![8] The true Tzadik who is the main true splendor, and grace, and beauty, of the world[9] makes baalay teshuva (-penitents) and converts through the aspect of his name alone, because there are many souls that draw close and bond with him only because of his name alone, that his name alone goes and spreads out in the world, and through this alone they bond with him, and he teaches them his wisdom, and imbues them with his intellect in order to save them from the realm of death, the aspect of sleep, and he subdues, and nullifies, and burns (down) the evil completely, and they are gathered, and drawn close, and lifted, all the rejected and scattered, to Hashem Yisburach.[10]

Even a person who is the great of the greatest needs to be very cautious that he doesn’t stumble Heaven forbid through the proliferation of his wisdom, like what happened by the King’s son with his wise men (Story of the Seven Beggars), that through the proliferation of their wisdom they fell into apostasy, may the Merciful One save us. And the King’s son himself, even though because he has good in him, he would remember sometimes where (-in what state) he was in the world, and he would moan and sigh a lot over his fall into such quandaries, however, as soon as he would begin to use his intellect, the paralogisms of apostasy would return to him and be strengthened. And so it was many times, as is explained in the beginning of the awesome story of the Seven Beggars, see there. From this it is understood how it is necessary to be cautious and on guard not to get started with this whatsoever.[11]

Sometimes there are people who abound to engage just in domains of knowledge, and by and large their intent with this is just for the sake of the vanities of this world, that is, for the sake of importance and honor, or money, and so forth, and because they are engaged just in the domains of knowledge, through this they completely forget the tactics of war, that is, how to fight the great battle which a person must fight in this world, which is the batter of the (evil) inclination, and sometimes they come to absolute apostasy through the domains of knowledge, therefore it is necessary to be extremely wary of this![12]

In every generation there are found elders and elite who oppose the great Tzadik who is a wondrous novelty, who is engaged in drawing the souls of the phenomenally alienated close to Hashem Yisburach, and he draws His light upon each one until it illuminates for him wherever he is, each on according to his aspect.[13]

The brazen faced extremely mixed up the world, to the extent that it is impossible for most of the world to know the whereabouts of the true Tzadik and Leader who can lead Israel properly, and the main culling of the faith and sustaining of the world in this generation is specifically by him.[14] And their main quashing is just through truth, because someone who looks towards the real truth, and endeavors and toils always to attain the point of truth, certainly he does not fear any evil eye[15]. But he needs to be very strong minded not to allow himself to be defeated by any person, because the truth is always victorious, and in the very end Hashem Yisburach will finalize as He wills, and “Hashem will cut down all the smooth talkers (Psalms 12:4),” and the speakers of lushon hura (-evil talk, slander) and strife will be forced to their knees and fall over (Prayer of Ullainoo), and they will not be able to confuse the world from listening to the call of the words of the Tzadik, on the contrary, the pure words of the Tzadik will be revealed and elevated in the entire world[16], until everything that is made will know that You made it etc. and they will all make one society to do Your will etc. (Prayer of Musaf, Rosh Hashana, also mentioned in Likutay Halachos cited earlier, Yoreh Daya II, Laws of Converts 3:5).

On account of the harsh suffering that befell upon me, not upon you, I did not write for such a long time, but (my) love for him, true love, is engraved deep in my heart always without interruption, and (I) supplicate for his (-your – third person) wellbeing and salvation, and wish his wellbeing and the wellbeing of his esteemed daughter (/household).

Holy Yearning Soul Factory

HH

There is a Breslov tradition that one of the ways we can bring the final redemption is by utilizing a devotion Rabbainu promoted and of which Rabbainu revealed awesome secrets. This is the devotion of expressing yearning and longing for Hashem Yisburach and everything holy. Rabbainu revealed (Likutay Moharan, Torah-teaching 31[1]) that when one yearns for something he creates a soul bikoach (-potential, dormant) and by expressing the yearning verbally that soul is brought into the world bifoa'el (-actual, working). The soul created is in the form of the yearning that created it, if the yearning was holy, then a holy soul will now be set out into the world and attach itself to someone and motivate that person to holiness, and if G"f the yearning was for something not holy, likewise, a soul will go out etc.. The most ruthless evil criminal may be impervious and impregnable to any treatment or conditioning, but can be breached and overtaken by a soul created by a simple expression of holy yearning.

Unfortunately, too many people are expressing their desires for the pleasures of the flesh, sending out terrible persuasions to remain enslaved to the emptiness of this physical world, whereas with regard to good deeds and holiness, even when people do some amazing kindnesses or reach and accomplish new heights in purity of mind and spirit, they do not moan, rave, and extol excitingly about it, and the feat remains a nice plateau without being given the ability to spread its wings and bring the whole world around to its attainment, or to motivate others to reach even greater heights.

Thus we find in the Story of Ancient Times of A Lost Princess, the princess alluding to the Shechina – the Divine Presence, tells the second to the king, "It is impossible for you to take me out, unless you choose for yourself a place and remain there for a full year, and all that year you must long for me that you should take me out, and whenever you have free time, you must only long, desire, and hope to take me out."

Take two minutes every day, devoted solely to speaking out your love, yearning, longing, need, and desire for Hashem Yisburach and everything holy. Set an alarm clock so that you don't pass it up, give yourself an extra minute to first say:

Lishaim (for the sake of) Yeechued (unifying) Koodshu Breech Hoo (Hashem Yisburach) OoShicheentay (with His Divine Presence), bidicheeloo (with fear/awe) ooricheemoo (and with love), ooricheemoo (and with love) oodicheeloo (and with fear/awe), li-yachaid (to unify) shaim (the name) Yud Kay (Y"H) bi (with) Vuv Kay (V"H), bishaim (in the name of) kul (all of) Yisroel (Israel); Hereby, I bind myself to all the true tzadikim of our generation, and to all the true tzadikim dwellers of the dust, holy ones who are in the earth, and specifically to Rabbainu Hakadoash (our holy Rebbe), tzadik foundation of the world, N'achal (stream) N'oavaya (gushing) M'ikor (source) Ch'uchmu (wisdom) [acronym Nachman], Rabbainu Na Nach Nachma Nachman MayUman in my desires, yearning, longing, thought, speech, and actions, so that they be desirous and meritorious before Hashem Yisburach, and so that the expressed yearning create souls bikoach and bifoaal which go out and arouse holy yearning in others. With love for all my fellow Jews as we are commanded to love one another as ourselves.
"Veehee (and may) noa'am (the pleasantness of) Adoan"ai (Hashem) Eloahainoo (our Gd) ulainoo (be upon us), oomaasay yudainoo (and the work of our hands) koaninuh ulainoo (be established for us), oomaasay yudainoo (and the work of our hands) koaninaihoo (be established) [Psalms 90:17]."

And now/then let loose, and start pumping holy souls into the world.

Na Nach Nachma Nachman MayUman

Blossoms of the Spring - Letter 9

Letter 9

BH, 11 Eyar 718 (Thursday, 1 May, 1958). Tiberius

He who I love as my own soul, Mr. Z. Shazar, Shalom and true life.

I have already written that I believe and hope, that because of the wondrous Providence that took place on Chol Hamoed Pesach (-intermediary days of Passover), he will have an advantage and great blessing in the endeavor of drawing. However, concurrent with this, I find myself obligated to reveal to his ears the truth which is in my heart, that in the matter of our endeavor, I am completely free of all types of materialistic ulterior self-interest for money and honor and the likes, Heaven forbid, just "for Hashem alone (Exodus 22:19)." And I am confident, and I rely upon the elevated level of his wisdom, that he understands and knows this matter with complete clarity by his own respectable self. Hashem Yisburach knows and is witness, that I am ready and prepared to sacrifice my life, and my money, and everything I have for the sake of this cause, to draw a soul of Israel close to Hashem Yisburach, or in any event, to instill in him some thought of repentance, even for only one second!

Rabbainu o.b.m. said (Avunehu Barzel, Words and Stories of Rabbainu o.b.m. 26, also brought down in Siach Sarfay Kodesh 1-518):
a.       Dus <the> gadlus <haughtiness> hub ich <I have> shoyn <already> foon aych tzoobruchen <broken from you – in the Hebrew this was translated, "the haughtiness that is in you, I have already broken>.
b.      Ayn avairu <a sin> vet <will> aych krenkin <cause you suffering>, es <it> vet <will> aych shoyn nit bakumen <already not be gratifying>. Afeeloo <even if> eer <you> vet <will> tun <do (a sin)> vet dus zayn <it will be> un hant <without hands> oon <and> un <without> feess <feet>.
c.       Miforsumim <renown> shel <of> shekehr <falsehood – i.e. prestigious rabbis who are unworthy of their fame, and are thus frauds> vet eer ziyehr bifnayhem nit un kiken <you will not look upon their faces>, eer <you> hut <have> shoyn <already> farzicht <tasted> oongarishen <Hungarian> vine <wine>[1].

Moharna"t (acronym for: Our Teacher HaRav <The Rabbi> Nussun) asked Rabbainu za.tza.l. why he conceals himself (-his greatness) from before the Rav of Berdichev. And he replied, "To draw close to me, he cannot, except if he kindles the pipe for me, and this is not possible!"[2]
Even if a person did what did, and sinned what he sinned, also then Hashem Yisburach constricts Himself from no limit and no end (-infinity), and conveys hints to him that he should draw close Him, with courses of different events which He brings about for all of this from His sublime mysteries, because He, blessed He, devises schemes so that no reject will be rejected from Him (Samuel 2:14:14). However all these allusions of His, and all His calling to us is through the true tzadik, that we return to Him from any place which may be – from all types of impediments, and incentives, and crookedness of the heart, from all types of uprising of the kleepu (-husk of impurity) of Amulaik which rises over a person, and every place his mind and his heart strayed and erred[3].
The very point of the innermost inside of the heart of every single one of Israel – abundant and fierce waters cannot extinguish it (Song of Songs 8:7), even if there transpires over him what transpires, even though the bal duvur (-litigator-evil inclination-Satan) intensifies severely, and just about incinerates him completely, even still, it is forbidden for him to despair of himself, just, it is necessary to glean and to search for some good points from the midst of the multitude of sins which he was errant in them, and through this he will merit to return to Hashem Yisburach in truth (Likutay Moharan, Torah 282 – "Azamru").

These garments of feces that every person has, as long as he did not rectify his sins, and particularly he who got filthy the way he got filthy, may the Merciful One save us, which through this the obstructions and partition are aroused and intensify upon him every time, and they spread out before him and are very extremely curtailing, like an actual river, and from there come all the falls and alienation of many people from Hashem Yisburach, because even if one arouses some times to return to Hashem Yisburach, immediately the garments of feces spread out against him, and they do not allow him to draw close, and so it is every time, and over this David screamed (Psalms 69:3), "I drowned in the slimy deep bog and there is no foothold etc.," "(verse 15) save me from mud so that I don't drown etc.," and the essential rectification for this is[4] … [the end of this letter is missing].

[1] See the parable this is referring to in The Life of Our Leader Rabbi Nachman, article 260.
[2] Siach Sarfay Kodesh (5:52) has a slightly different version, and actually offers an original quotation of the Yiddish words Rabbainu reputedly said (I'm not sure if this makes it more reliable…) – Rabbainu said that if he wanted to reveal himself (-at large), the gadol hador (-greatest Rabbi of the generation) would have to attend to him and bring forth the fiery coal and kindle his pipe, and this cannot possibly happen.
Further insight into this can be drawn from the third addendum to The Life of Our Leader Rabbi Nachman which recounts how Rabbainu's grandfather, Rabbi Nachman of Hordenka lit the pipe of the Bal Shem Tov, fully prostrating himself in the process, his sister was very disturbed by this, and he told her, "What can I tell you of his greatness? If you would know of his greatness you would say he was the Holy One Blessed He, Himself, but I, having more daas (realization of knowledge) than you, I know that he serves the Holy One Blessed He."

A very practical way to bring the redemption according to Breslov tradition

HH

There is a tradition in Breslov that there is a very simple, powerful, and practical way for us to bring the redemption, and that is by utilizing the Torah that Rabbainu revealed in Likutay Moharan, Torah-Lesson 31, that every holy yearning and longing creates a soul which goes out into the world and whoever it encounters it brings them good desires and thoughts. Thus any person can literally be a mega factory, spewing out vast quantities of holy souls which go out and tune everyone in to holiness. The yearning must be verbalized to produce the souls.

Looking at history, up to the holocaust, Breslov was starting to grow, especially in Poland it gained very strong traction. Most of them were killed may HY avenge their blood. After the holocaust we see just a few Breslovers in Israel, one can read about them in Yimay Shmuel - The days of Shmuel Horowitz, a close friend of Saba Yisroel. They were a very small group, blood brothers. They lived under constant threat that they would be accused of spying for the Russians (Uman was then in Russia)- the great enemy of the Turks who ruled Israel, and they were hated etc. etc.. These few Breslovers lived entirely for and by Rabbainu. Thus they were very much occupied in manufacturing and producing holy souls to proliferate goodness in the world. Shmuel Horowitz himself writes how often he couldn't sleep at night (these Breslovers in the preNanach era were much stronger willed than us, they were able to go sometimes for 2 days without sleep, just on sheer willpower in the holy excitement of devotion of Hashem) as he lay pumped up with intense yearning for holiness - hours of yearning, before getting up for midnight and going all out in prayer in hisbodidus. Undoubtedly these few Breslovers were rocking the entire world with their infusion of holy souls - and it is safe to presume that the entire hippy movement, where so many millions of people were sick of living empty materialistic lives and sought to find some meaning, all of  this can be attributed to the few Breslovers. Unfortunately, aside from Shlomo Carlbach there were no others to help guide the masses to holiness, and Breslov was to small and contained to be on the scene, until Saba Yisroel came out fully with the holy Petek.

It is high time that the holy men of Rabbainu, those true to the holy Petek, get back in there, get back to this holy enterprise.

Every person who believes in Rabbainu Na Nach Nachma Nachman MeUman should set for himself/herself a minimal time daily, that no matter what he will not forgo (an if there are extenuating circumstances he will make up the time the next day) to dedicate to this simple holy critical devotion, the manufacturing, production, and delivery of holy souls into the world. No day should ever pass by without taking at least one moment to actively discharging a good soul out there - as a minimum limit, and a person should have a primary goal of a lengthier daily time period dedicated to contributing holy souls to the world. Thus he should have two boundaries, a bare minimum that in no way whatsoever he reneges, and a primary full daily regimen.

It has been said that every time one says Na Nach Nachma Nachman MeUman - it brings 200 people to have a thought of repentance. That is one thought, and one needs many more, and there are billions of people... so get to work!

Cameron Diaz and Husband Benji Madden getting a taste of Nanach

HH

This is how it went down. Our Nanach friend in L.A. - Eliyahu Silwan n"y was experiencing great doubts whether he should continue doing his outreach even to gentiles and all the stars. So one night in his yard he was contemplating the issue, doing hisbodidus, and he turned and said to HY, if I should continue, then send me someone really big tomorrow. The next morning he recieved a phone call from Cameron Diaz asking for an appointment.... So Cameron and her huband Benji Madden came by to speak with Eliyahu Nanach. Eliyahu takes alook at Benji -- who's arms are covered with tatoos of the cross and the like, and tells him that he is a Jew, and that he should confront his mother relentlessly until she admits. And so he did, his mother firmly insisted persistently she wasn't Jewish (where he got the name Benjamin Levi, I don't know), but at the very end she capitulated and confessed, but told him to keep it quiet. So Cameron Diaz began wearing the Nanach kameya, and Benji Madden and his twin brother Joel become regular Shabbos guests by Eliyahu Nanach.

Missionaries - don't speak to them period!

HH

Sefer Hamidos ("Distancing the Wicked" 17):
Do not speak to seducers (missionaries), even to chastise them or bring them close (to repent).

Question is if there are loopholes and leniencies to this, because we find for example that Rabbainu said (- ibid item #6): One who judges a wicked person favorably is also called wicked. Yet we know that Rabbainu said at a different occasion how is it possible to consider a Jew so wicked that it is inconceivable to judge him favorably?! Every Jew has some point of good, and from viewing the person from that point one can turn that person around completely to the good. So can that be done for a missionary?
