While many rabbis are busy in Elul reaching high levels of holiness, Rabbainu is busy going down reaching out to even the lowest dregs of society. Just like HY makes Himself most available in these times, He is our beloved, so too Rabbainu follows in His ways and makes a friendship even with the heretics, as he did in Uman. Even his leading disciple Rabbi Nussun was mind-boggled seeing Rabbi Nachman playing chess with the heretics, he couldn't understand it, even after Rabbainu explained to him that a king has friends to have fun with, Rabbi Nussun couldn't fathom this, and in the heritage of Breslov transmitted by Rabbi Nussun he gives no framework for such behaviour other than documenting Rabbainu's practices. Only Rabbainu's prized student Saba Yisroel Dov Odesser received this inscrutable way by virtue of the holy Petek which he received by Rabbainu, signed Na Nach Nachma Nachman MayUman.
