191 - Know That It Is Possible That One Sits Next to His Friend in One Place in the Garden of Eden
Know that it is possible for one person to sit next to his friend in the same place in the Garden of Eden, where one experiences all the pleasures, amusements, and the 310 worlds, while his friend feels nothing and has no pleasure. As it is written (Proverbs 25:3): "For the heavens are for height and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings has no investigation." Our Rabbis, of blessed memory, said (Shabbat 11a): If all the seas were ink and marshes quills, they would not suffice to describe the vastness of authority, as it is said: "heavens for height" etc. Thus, the heart of kings surpasses the vastness of heavens and earth's depths, which span thousands upon thousands of parasangs. Yet the heart and brain, so small in size, encompass all – one can focus on every country, grasping and picturing them, the heavens, and more in the heart, for "the heart of kings has no investigation." See and comprehend the Creator's greatness: how the small contains the vast, with a tiny piece of heart or brain holding such immense things. This is only because divinity resides there, with its essence in the heart (as explained elsewhere, sign 49).
From this, understand: if the heart, containing merely an aspect of divinity – like one part in thousands of thousands from the Creator's providence – has such great value in grasping countless worlds in its small space, even for non-Jews it is said: "and the heart of kings has no investigation," referring to focusing on countries and people, grasping all under rule. A fortiori for the Creator's greatness. The king's true greatness, pleasure, and rule exist only in the heart that knows its dominion over countries, ruling as it desires. Thus, one can hold all 310 worlds in the heart (boundless in grasp). One may enjoy all pleasures and amusements, while the friend beside him feels nothing, his heart lacking these goods that the tzadik friend holds within. Blessed is he, for the main sensation of world-to-come pleasure and all 310 worlds is in the heart.
