Shlomo Carlebach used to tell over that when the successor of the rebbe of karlin was a kid, he asked his father: If a person prays to HY and he's screaming as if a sharp sword is pressed against his neck, is that sufficient?
His father answered: yes, definitely to start off, but afterwards it has to be so much more.
Rabbainu says prayer is life itself, prayer is HY. As it says in Scripture תפלה לא-ל חיי.
