It says in Sefer Hamidos (Character: daas - cognizance 1:14):
When a person wants to know what to do in a given situation, he should open up a (holy) book, and he will understand what to do.
Some friends have used a random number generator for this, it is my opinion that one should open the book directly, because the holiness of the book is a great factor here and is being relied upon to interplay in the situation, so it should be addressed directly and not remotely.
