"You should be able to feel another's troubles in your own heart. This is especially true when many are suffering. It is possible to recognize another's anguish clearly, and still not feel it in your heart.
When an antire community is in distress, you should surely feel its agony in your heart. If you do not feel it, you should strike your head agains the wall. Meaning, you shoud strike your head against the walls of your heart.
This is the meaning of the verse , "You should know this day and take it to your heart" (Devarim, 4:39). You must bring the realization from your mind to your heart. Understand this well." ("Rebbe Nachman's Wisdom" # 39).
This is what Rabbeinu demands of us. Yet, in our weak generation, this is not so easy. Somehow we must figure out a way to remain (or become) compassionate without getting overwhelmed. to keep our hearts open without falling into panic or despair. This is a formidable task. But, if we really work on it, with Hashem's help, we will get there.
