Gauging one's general well being by recovery

Many years ago, (I now recount my sins) I read a novel which posited that one cannot judge his overall physical shape by a feat that he can accomplish, because the body can rise to an occasion and perform extraordinarily, therefore one's fitness can be seen only in the recovery, how long and so forth it takes to recover from the given feat.

This can be applied to the spiritual as well, at times one can merit to sudden inspiration (-either through his own merit, like for example when one is praying as best as he can, suddenly the Ain Sof B"H can open up for him, see Likutay Moharan, Torah 4, and sometimes from Heaven one will be filled with tremendous Fear of Heaven, see Likutay Moharan, Torah 102), this will not necessarily be demonstrative of his actual level, which must be gauged by the process of how long and so forth it will take for him to inculcate his new achievement.
