Knowing right from wrong

Once when I was in Yeshiva I had a chavrusa (study partner) who had very fine midos (character traits). Once when we were studying a difficult section of the Talmud we got into a dispute in how to understand it. After much argumentation he says to me, "Simcha, you are smarter than me, but your approach is wrong, so please help me develop my approach." Unfortunately I don't remember if I agreed with his verdict, but nonetheless he definitely struck home with his approach.
