The entire world is sustained through song. And song originates in the aspect of Malchut, the Kingdom, which is the Divine Presence, the Shechinah. When the Shechinah is in exile, her song is constricted, muted. But when she is raised from the dust—when one lifts the Divine Presence from her fallen state—then song is restored. And through song, all of Creation is renewed and continues to exist.
Therefore, when a person sings and plays music in holiness—intending to awaken and uplift the Shechinah—he participates in the renewal of the world. This is the deeper meaning of the verse: “He has placed a song in my mouth, a hymn to our God; many will see and revere…” (Psalms 40:4). Through holy song, reverence for God spreads among the nations, and the Divine Presence is glorified and uplifted.
