The Book of Ruth tells us that really Tov had the mitzva of redeeming Naomi, however Boaz asserted that this would entail taking Ruth as a wife. Tov was willing to redeem Naomi but not willing to take Ruth as a wife because he understood that it was a forbidden relationship, even though the highest court of the land ruled that it was a mitzva. According to our Sages, Ruth was one of the most beautiful women in history, and even still Tov stood his ground to protect his sanctity! Thanks to this amazing strength of Tov, Boaz was able to marry Ruth and from them came King David.
