There is a saying in Breslov, "When you break a taavah (a physical desire), you get two!" This means that starting an all-out war with our passions doesn't really work. There has to be a better way.
Yet, since "Hashem has made one opposite the other" as it says in Koheles, there has to be a positive application of the same idea. The more we break our heart before Hashem, the stronger it gets. Suddenly, we have not one heart but many, all directed Upwards in the most powerful way!
