Likutay Moharan - Torah-teaching 40

Likutay Moharan Volume 1: Torah 40

Likutay Moharan Volume 1: Torah 40

“These are the journeys of the children of Yisrael” [Numbers 33:1]

[In the language of our master, Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, of blessed memory]

It is brought in the holy book Asarah Ma’amaros (Ten Utterances [Kabbalistic work by Rabbi Menachem Azariah da Fano]): “These are the mas’ai (journeys [spiritual movements]) of the children of Yisrael” because they sinned in “these are your gods, Yisrael” [Exodus 32:4]. Because of this, the children of Yisrael shall journey. It emerges that all the nesiyos (journeys) of a person are because of the kilkul ha’emunah (spoiling of faith [lack of trust in G-d]), which is the aspect of avodas alilim (idol worship [service of foreign powers]). For if he believed with complete emunah (faith [spiritual trust in G-d]) that the Holy One, blessed be He, can prepare for him all his needs, he would not journey any nesiyah (journey). It emerges that nesiyah (journey) is a kilkul emunah (spoiling of faith), which is the aspect of avodas alilim (idol worship). And this is what is written regarding avodas alilim (idol worship): “Go out, say to him” [Isaiah 30:22]. “Go out,” this is the aspect of nesiyah (journey) and tiltul (movement [displacement]). Also, through tiltul (movement) [effort to rectify], he rectifies the tiltul (movement) that he caused, [kivyakhol (as if)] above [in the spiritual realms], as it is written: “And the maseikhah (molten image [idol]) is narrow as it gathers” [Isaiah 28:20]. Also, through avodas alilim (idol worship), the matar (rain [divine abundance]) is withheld, as it is written: “And you shall serve other gods, etc., and there shall be no matar (rain)” [Deuteronomy 11:16-17]. And when there is no matar (rain), there is no sava’ah (satiety [abundance]). As it is written: “The mountains shall bear shalom (peace) for the people” [Psalms 72:3], as Rashi explained, then no man helps his fellow. And each one needs to journey and move from place to place for his parnasah (sustenance [livelihood]). Also, golus (exile [dispersion]) comes upon the bittul Torah (negation of Torah [lack of study]), as it is written: “My people are golah (exiled) for lack of da’as (knowledge [Torah wisdom])” [Isaiah 5:13]. And through avodas alilim (idol worship), comes the atziras geshamim (withholding of rains), and when there is no kemach (flour [material sustenance]), there is no Torah [Avot 3:17].

Hilula of Rabbi Yehuda Hachasid - 6 Cheshvon (Tonight-tomorrow) - MORTIFICATIONS

HH

This post is an excerpt from the book The Praises of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, article 24, in honor of Rabbi Yehuda Hachasid.

Also they understood from his words that he spoke with them, that in his youth when he toiled and labored for the service of Hashem, he had many (many) types of mortification, and according to what was heard and understood from his words, (that) he had all types of mortifications that there are in the world, be it rolling in the snow[1] etc. and so forth[2]. And he said, that the mortification of restraining oneself not to scratch oneself at all, this is the overly greatest mortification, that is, when a person is being bit (-irritated) by the things found close to his skin, and it is the way of everyone to scratch themselves whenever they feel the biting (-itching); and he accepted this as a mortification, to force himself not to scratch at all, not with his hand, and not with his body, and not with any limb, and he said, that this is a very great mortification, for the person is inert, and then the biting/itching grows stronger, and he is forbidden to move his hands or any limb, just to feel every bite in his mind, and it is a very great mortification. (And I have already heard this from other people, that this is a very great mortification). And he of blessed memory did everything, all the types of mortifications that there are in the world, and everything - with temeemus (unfeigned wholesomeness, wholeheartedness, simplicity, sincerity) and truth, until he merited to what he merited, fortunate is he.

[1] See Samuel (2:23:20) and the Talmud, Brachos 18b. The Arizal revealed some secrets regarding this mortification in Shaar Ruach Hakodesh, rectification 22 (R.A.K.). The Rishash revealed more secrets about it, and there are various allusions to this in the Scriptures. A famous rabbi once told me that the main intent of this mortification in particular and many of them in general is to shock the body so that the soul breaks free. However, various places in the holy teachings of our Sages and Rabbainu prove that the pain and self-sacrifice itself is the main goal. However, see Likutay Moharan 170, that through suffering the soul is enlarged.
[2] This needs further study, because there are some very wild mortifications brought down in the holy books which Rabbainu was definitely aware of, e.g. Rabbi Yehuda Hachasid (Sefer Chasidim 167) praises someone who stood naked by a beehive and was stung all over his body, and when he recovered he did it again. This would be almost impossible to do without anyone knowing. Perhaps Rabbainu did this on a lower scale, or there is a secret to this perhaps on the lines of what is revealed in Likutay Moharan, Torah-teaching 193, that a person can visualize upon himself the four capital punishments so vividly and realistically, that he will actual feel the suffering, and will be in actual mortal danger of dying.
After some contemplation B.H. it occurred to me that the aforementioned mortification brought down by Rabbi Yehuda Hachasid was done as an atonement and rectification for adultery, and all similar drastic mortifications especially when they are life threatening probably do not come under the category of regular “segufim” (mortifications) which are done to weeken the physical desires of the body and so forth, whereas these severe tasks were intended literally to flirt with death to absolve the person of the sin, culpable of death, which he transgressed, even open to the possibility that he might in fact die. Thus we can assert that Rabbainu did not mean that he did mortifications of that sort.

Blossoms of the Spring - Letter 2

With the Help of G-d, Monday, Holiday of Independence, 717 (Monday, 6 May, 1957)

This is the day that G-d did with us miracles and wonders in order to make great and sanctify His Great Name, we rejoice and are happy in His salvation, and express our gratitude and sing praises before Him Blessed He. So He should finish with us the complete redemption which after it has no exile.

In honor of my dear cherished pleasant friend, personage of intelligence and wisdom to determine and understand the truth, Mr. Zalman Shazar, (greetings of) peace and eternal life.

Driven by yearning and longing and great love and true love, pure of ulterior vain motives, which will never be extinguished, I have come here to bring happiness to his pure heart with a sampling of treats and precious delicacies which his soul loves, content sweeter than honey, illuminating to they eyes, and restoring the soul from paths of death to the paths of life, which flow out from the source of wisdom revealed by the hallowed concealed light of lights, our holy and awesome master ob”m.

First of all I will repeat twice and thrice my deep thanks from the depth of a true heart for the generosity of his pure heart with the sum of ten lira which I received a month ago through Mrs. D. Ussoavaski, and he should know that immediately I gave the full aforementioned sum to the hands of our holy master ob”m as a redemption for his soul, that is (I put the money) in the charity fund (lit. Box) for his holy affairs, to benefit the public (-afford them with the opportunity to gain merit), and I am praying and expectant that in return for this, he will be blessed by G-d from Zion with long life and all good, and he will renew his soul for the good, in such a way that he will feel profoundly in his heart, and his mind, and in all his bones the pleasantness of the sweetness of the light of the daas (realization of knowledge) of the true tzadik which shines even now like the sun at noon, in the whole entire world, until he merits in his lifetime to rectify everything in the utmost rectification, and to transmute all the sins to merits.

The truth I shall say, that for a long time I was happy and had great nachas (-satisfaction and enjoyment especially from one’s children or students) when I saw with my eyes that he has the merit of a matter precious, wondrous, and exalted, high and lofty, that there is nothing higher than it.

Whoever really, truly desires, and doesn't fool himself, can understand from afar where the true daas (realization of knowledge) that is worthy of relying upon it and believing in it, is, and who the true tzadikim and kosher (-upright) people are, and to whom it is befitting to bond oneself in truth.

The main rectification and atonement of all the sins is only through the true tzadik who works to draw (down) the lights of the makeefeen (-peripheral, surrounding, encompassing – these are of a higher level), and to illuminate the daas in Israel, through which he extracts them from sins, and not only (lit. Enough) that he saves Israel through this from sins, he even has the power to atone sins so to speak (“kavi-yuchol” - that is, this is really solely the jurisdiction of G-d, but nevertheless, the tzadik has reach even here), because the lights of his makeefeem are the aspect of the future world, the aspect of teshuva (-repentance), the aspect of Yom Kippur (-The Day of Atonement), where all the sins are atoned, and all the sins are transmuted there to merits. [T.N. see Likutay Halachos, Yoreh Dayah, Raishis Hagaiz 3].

Every one, according to how much he recognizes in his soul, the enormity of his shortcomings, and his utter alienation that he has so much distanced from Hashem Yisburach, so too he needs specifically to draw close to the true Rebbe of the very, very greatest stature, because the smaller he is – he needs a greater true Rebbe. [T.N. Likutay Moharan 30].

The general principle is, that the dominion is in the hands of the tzadik to perform transactions as he desires, and the main dominion is to illuminate and arouse the heart of an Israelite to the service of Hashem Yisburach. Therefore it is essential to bind oneself to the true tzadikim, and from them he will receive strength, and light, and arousal for Hashem Yisburach, until he truly returns to Hashem. [T.N. Likutay Moharan 34].

There is a supernal field where the neshamoas (-souls) grow, and these souls need a “Bal <master of> Hasudeh <the field>” (-a gardener) to oversee them and tend to their rectification. And it is necessary for every one who desires to have compassion on his neshama (-soul), to beseech and implore copiously before Hashem Yisburach all his days that he should merit to draw close to this tzadik who is the Bal Hasudeh <Master of the Field>, who gazes upon each one to bring him to the true tachlis (-ultimate purpose and end), because it is impossible to come to the good and eternal tachlis except by means of this tzadik who is the aspect of the supernal Bal Hasudeh. [T.N. Likutay Moharan 70].

All aitzoas (-advice, remedies) need to be obtained from true tzadikim, and through this the judgments are mitigated and he will receive salvation [T.N. Likutay Moharan 143 and 7].
