Good deed of the Day

As you might know, I barely leave my little Nanach enclave ever, today however I decided to venture out to the supermarket. It was already getting dark. On the way I saw this guy lying on the ground on the curb, I almost continued but I managed to call out to him if all was ok. No answer, so I walked over. This guy had broken his cane and fell, almost no teeth, twisted feet, and reeked like the garbage bin, some of his purse contents had also spilled out. He couldn't speak, only mutter a bit once in a very long time. Anyway I figured that this is why I had came out tonight, and I gave him all my attention, telling him to take his time, no rush, just to everything the best way possible. And so I helped him gather his stuff and make his way to his apartment some 3-4 stories up. Even though I am usually particular not to touch anyone, here I obviously had no choice but to assist him and support him. Later when I got to the supermarket I scrubbed my hands with soap but the stench remained, now I applied bleach which is causing a different unpleasant smell blended with the soap.... oy vay. In any event when we got up to his apartment he couldn't find the key, I also tried going through his purse but couldn't find it. So I went all the way back to the scene of his fall, and search and searched with no luck. So I went back up, and there he was, he had found the key, so I helped him open the door and turn on the lights (he managed to say "chashmal" - electricity), got his ok that he was alright, and departed.

Real Kindness

The Baal Shem Tov made it known that there is nothing greater than doing even a little favor for someone, and when Rabbainu once spoke about the greatness of the mitzva of hospitality, and his daughter asked him how it was possible to fulfill it, he answered, “What do you think? There’s a guest! A little more tablecloth… another piece of challa…” (Siach Sarfay Kodesh 2:97, and see Bi’air Mayim Chaim, Va’yairu 18:8 cited there). However, don’t think for a moment that this was the entire enterprise of our forefather Abraham and the other holy tzadikim. Rabbainu revealed in Likutay Moharan (Torah-teaching 31) that all charity and kindness is deficient, and is only complete with the essential foundation of faith which is the underlying main factor in the importance of charity. And in Torah-teaching 53 Rabbainu revealed that the reason why the holy tzadikim were so busy running after people to return them to the faith, was to complete and perfect their da’as (holy realization of knowledge), see there. So although it is in fact true that Abraham was very busy doting on his guests and doing his utmost to pamper them, that was a very superficial aspect of what he was really doing. The Zohar revealed that every guest that came his way, immediately he began to pray for them and set out to purify them and rectify them. As soon as they walked into Abrahams property, if they were impure, the ground would split apart from beneath them and they would fall directly into a mikva, and Abraham would commence praying and working to rectify them. This is the real kindness and charity, this is the way of the holy faith.

The main importance of charity is faith!

Rabbainu Na Nach Nachma Nachman MeUman reveals an amazing novelty which after consideration one will realize is really the simple truth. In Likutay Moharan, torah 31, Rabbi Nachman writes that the main importance of charity is faith. This is seemingly a very odd statement, for if anything one would be inclined to base the importance of charity on the kindness put into it or that it achieves - as the Talmud says: Charity only pays (-probably referring to reward in this world) according to the gemilas chessed in it, so where does faith come into this?

 Now, true, there are always powerful criminals that cultivate certain charities, and certainly there is great injustice in that - for people to have dependency and sustenance from such ill gotten provision, however that seems to be a radical element, and not something to scale the merit of all charity. Yet here we can already see that charity can produce a lack of faith, at least by the recipients, and in truth, every recipient may be faced with challenges of faith, seeing how they are being provided for by other people.

The Talmud says that if a person has 'daas' (realization of knowledge) he lacks nothing, and if he lacks 'daas' than he has nothing. Basically a person's real wealth is relative to his daas. The Talmud also revealed that a person who gives charity is blessed with 6 blessings, whereas appeasing the pauper earns 11 blessings. Appeasing brings daas, it is real giving. Rabbi Nachman says more, that these blessings are not simply rewards, rather a person who approaches to give charity opens up these great channels of blessings (in the same way our Sages ob"m said that one who prays for someone else is answered first, and Besh't explained etc.), and as he himself is blessed he blesses the pauper with his charity and appeasement. In many places Rabbi Nachman elucidates that the root of daas is faith, as e.g. Rabbainu taught that one must constantly concretize one's faith establishing it for himself as actual knowledge, and attain even higher faith in what is beyond his daas. And in this teaching too, Likutay Moharan 31, Rabbainu lays down that the root of all the blessings is faith, that is why the perfection of charity is only on Shabbos, see there. So in effect when one comes to give charity, he reaches up to the source of all blessing - faith (-even at a simple level - a person before parting with his money is forced to strengthen his faith that he will not lose by this, and if the person is in tune with the reality of Hashem, obviously he is reading this and will have these intentions B"H), and opens up channels of blessing -- daas, and bestows from this on the poor person in front of him. Ultimately the poor person has free choice to believe as he will, but the higher and holier the charity is the more the faith is apparent - even as it is apparent that the world has a creator and didn't just appear - and thus it is quite clear, that the main importance of charity is the faith - that is where it begins, from which comes the blessing, donation, the daas, and ultimately that's what we are hoping to achieve to fill the world with faith.

Win the Lottery, not Nanach

The story is told that the wife of R' Yisroel Salanter bought a lottery ticket, when he heard of this he was very agitated and immediately wrote up a contract disowning himself of his wife's possessions. He said what if she should win all that money, how would I be able to sleep when there are people hungry in the streets and I am sitting on money that could feed them.

The story seems a bit strange, because wouldn't he rather be able to help as many people as possible. Probably RYS realized that although feeding these people is a high priority, it would not be the ultimate solution, and definitely not in areas further away. So since he was involved in working on his system to really bring rectification to the world, and having to tend to feeding people would detract him from this, he shied far away from such responsibility.

So the other day my friend bought a lottery ticket, and I told him straight up 100% he wasn’t going to win, and it was foolish of him even to think otherwise. For if a Nanach such as himself who has only one thing on his mind day and night to spread Na Nach Nachma Nachman MeUman, if he would come into a few million dollars that would already finance so much hafatza that would be forsure a huge step, if not the final step, to the ultimate redemption. And since it is highly doubtful that this is the way HY is going to bring the redemption, through this lottery ticket, there's just no way it's the winning ticket. It seemed to me that he agreed completely.

Merit to do kindness

HH last night I saw a Breslover excitedly looking to do a mitzvah, an act of kindness. He spotted me with about to have my hands fill, and he jumped to offer assistance, but I turned him down. A few minutes later he saw someone going to the mikva, and he jumped and offered the guy that he would run and get him a towel, but he was turned down. Who knows if he will merit to actually do the mitzvah, for even though the main thing is the desire, Rabbainu revealed that we should not be satisfied without the complete accomplishment.

Fishing Souls -- adventures in the life of Simcha Nanach

on the bus from Chaifa to Tiveria I sat right behind the bus driver, and across the aisle was a woman I'd about 50 years old, she was yenting on the telephone. After a while I made a phone call, and the bus driver turned to me and said, either hang up or go to the back of the bus, so I told the guy I was talking to that I'd speak to him a different time and hung up. The woman was very offended and she said to me something very derogatory about the driver ending with "pardon my french".... So I told the lady that I was happy to accommodate the driver, seeing that we are only in this world for a very limited amount of time it's quite the privilege and opportunity to make life easier for someone. She was really taken by this, and exclaimed, wow where did you learn to have such an attitude?! So I started telling her about the holy teachings of Na Nach Nachma Nachman MeUman and we were chatting, and she exclaimed: I'm sure glad that the bus driver told us to shut off our phones so that we could talk!

There is a matter (yesh inyan -- numerical value = Na Nach Nachma Nachman MeUman) that turns everything around to be good!!!
