Hilula of Rabbi Yehuda Hachasid - 6 Cheshvon (Tonight-tomorrow) - MORTIFICATIONS

HH

This post is an excerpt from the book The Praises of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, article 24, in honor of Rabbi Yehuda Hachasid.

Also they understood from his words that he spoke with them, that in his youth when he toiled and labored for the service of Hashem, he had many (many) types of mortification, and according to what was heard and understood from his words, (that) he had all types of mortifications that there are in the world, be it rolling in the snow[1] etc. and so forth[2]. And he said, that the mortification of restraining oneself not to scratch oneself at all, this is the overly greatest mortification, that is, when a person is being bit (-irritated) by the things found close to his skin, and it is the way of everyone to scratch themselves whenever they feel the biting (-itching); and he accepted this as a mortification, to force himself not to scratch at all, not with his hand, and not with his body, and not with any limb, and he said, that this is a very great mortification, for the person is inert, and then the biting/itching grows stronger, and he is forbidden to move his hands or any limb, just to feel every bite in his mind, and it is a very great mortification. (And I have already heard this from other people, that this is a very great mortification). And he of blessed memory did everything, all the types of mortifications that there are in the world, and everything - with temeemus (unfeigned wholesomeness, wholeheartedness, simplicity, sincerity) and truth, until he merited to what he merited, fortunate is he.

[1] See Samuel (2:23:20) and the Talmud, Brachos 18b. The Arizal revealed some secrets regarding this mortification in Shaar Ruach Hakodesh, rectification 22 (R.A.K.). The Rishash revealed more secrets about it, and there are various allusions to this in the Scriptures. A famous rabbi once told me that the main intent of this mortification in particular and many of them in general is to shock the body so that the soul breaks free. However, various places in the holy teachings of our Sages and Rabbainu prove that the pain and self-sacrifice itself is the main goal. However, see Likutay Moharan 170, that through suffering the soul is enlarged.
[2] This needs further study, because there are some very wild mortifications brought down in the holy books which Rabbainu was definitely aware of, e.g. Rabbi Yehuda Hachasid (Sefer Chasidim 167) praises someone who stood naked by a beehive and was stung all over his body, and when he recovered he did it again. This would be almost impossible to do without anyone knowing. Perhaps Rabbainu did this on a lower scale, or there is a secret to this perhaps on the lines of what is revealed in Likutay Moharan, Torah-teaching 193, that a person can visualize upon himself the four capital punishments so vividly and realistically, that he will actual feel the suffering, and will be in actual mortal danger of dying.
After some contemplation B.H. it occurred to me that the aforementioned mortification brought down by Rabbi Yehuda Hachasid was done as an atonement and rectification for adultery, and all similar drastic mortifications especially when they are life threatening probably do not come under the category of regular “segufim” (mortifications) which are done to weeken the physical desires of the body and so forth, whereas these severe tasks were intended literally to flirt with death to absolve the person of the sin, culpable of death, which he transgressed, even open to the possibility that he might in fact die. Thus we can assert that Rabbainu did not mean that he did mortifications of that sort.

The Virtue of Saying Na Nach Nachma Nachman MayUman 27-40

HH

27
And here in the Petek, Rabbainu reveals explicitly, with total clarity to the entire world: “Na Nach Nachma Nachman MayUman – that I am this song, come to me and be made into a man, exit from animal to man!” This is the root of the entire creation, of the Torah, of everything! This is the root of everything, the root of the Torah, and the root of the entire creation, and the root of our souls, and the root of everything. The root of all the tzadikim and all of the Torah. Just in this word, “Na Nach,” in this is included… “Na Nach Nachma Nachman MayUman,” and this isn’t known….

… So we entering, bonding to the root of the entire creation, yes, and wondrous things result, and this is propitious (-a segula) to… if a rectification is done in a person, if a person rectifies himself, then different matters are done with the (desire for) money and the (bodily) desires, one exits from the (bodily) desires and from the sins, and enters… this is the root of the entire creation, and if one says just this name, in this is included the entire Torah, and the entire creation, and all humanity, in just this: “Na Nach Nachma Nachman MayUman.”

This I didn’t know, sixty years I didn’t know about this, and after sixty years Hashem Yisburach brought about, and illuminated to me: “What?! You don’t know?! ‘Na Nach’, Do you know what ‘Na Nach’ is? – This is single (pashoot), double (cufool)….”

And it will turn around, supernaturally, the entire world will be turned around and there will be made from everyone… people from all the animals.[1]
(Sichos Saba 12:6)

28
[Visitor: And the “Na Nach Nachma Nachman MayUman,” this is for the whole world, for the gentiles as well? To say this, this helps?] Yes, yes. This is a segula (-propitious), this is a segula for all the salvations. Just he speaks… we see that there are in the world incantations that are whispered on a wound, on a burn, and this is a matter of[2]…. This is something easy to say, “Na Nach,” and this helps in every time of distress and at all times. And it is necessary… it is good to mention this name, when doing so one enters into the root of the creation, to Hashem Yisburach. Rabbainu Hakadosh, his main occupation is to bring us into Hashem Yisburach, to the Torah, that is his main avoaduh (-occupation, devotion).
(Sichos Saba 12:6)

29
Just to mention the name “Nachman MayUman (Nachman from Uman),” and this mitigates all the hardships, and all the sins, and all the heresy in the world, for it is such a power, a new power that never was ever!
(Tape 27a)

30
When one believes and mentions this holy name, this sweetens all… everything, all the sins, and all the heresy, and all the fallings, yes, he renews, renews! New! He makes us completely new!

Just to say, “Na Nach Nachma Nachman MayUman,” this is sufficient for us, to heal us, to give us vitality, to renew us.
(Tape 27a)

31
To say just, “Na Nach Nachma Nachman MayUman,” this is sufficient to destroy the entire sitra achruh (-other side, i.e. the evil realm), all the darkness. And this is a completely new construct that Rabbainu Hakados merited (to this), in this name is alluded everything that transpires over each and every one of Israel, and he turns everything around to good!
(Tape 27a)

32
If there is Heaven forbid some sort of ailment, something not good, then immediately you should say this holy name, “Na Nach Nachma Nachman MayUman,” shoyn (-it’s already (enough, taken care of))! It redeems, he reverses everything, everything, all the heresies, and all the sins, and all… he reverses.
(Tape 27a)

33
It doesn’t cost money, it doesn’t cost, it is like prepared, ready and prepared, yes. Just to mention this name, “Na Nach Nachma Nachman MayUman” – it is sufficient! He turns everything around, all the sins, and all the (intentional) transgressions, and all the evil, he turns everything around to the good! It there is by you Heaven forbid, on a person, something not good, it will be turned around to the good! “Na Nach,” immediately, immediately he should say, “Na Nach Nachma Nachman  MayUman!” Shoyn (-it’s already (sufficient))! He, he already turns everything around!
(Tape 27a)

34
This is in an automatic way, just mentioning the name, “Na Nach Nachma Nachman MayUman,” this works automatically, he turns everything around for the good, all the evil, and all the sins, and all the heresies, and everything, he turns everything around.

Do not forget this, this should always be on your conscious, in your heart, “Na Nach Nachma Nachman MayUman,” he turns everything around! Turns around, turns around!
(Tape 27a)

35
Just to mention, “Na Nach Nachma Nachman MayUman,” that’s it, with this there is everything, everything good (“kul toov”), all… it sweetens everything! It turns (everything) around, turns around, and turns (everything) around!
(Tape 27a)

36
We are fortunate that we are Jews and we mention the name, “Na Nach Nachma Nachman MayUman,” it turns everything around, everything, it turns everything around, just for the good! It renews everything and turns everything around.

If one is suffering/burdened, immediately: “Na Nach Nachma Nachman MayUman,” yes, this (it) turns everything around!
(Tape 27a)

37
“Na Nach Nachma Nachman MayUman,” this (it) makes everything new! It is new, and it makes everything new!

Truth like this is not in the world! Light such as this is not in the world! This is above everything, above the entire Torah, above all, above everything! Yes. In any event you have with what to strengthen yourself and to renew yourself completely… New! New! (Saba laughs) And he makes us, we are very broken, and he makes everything complete, new! He makes anew!
(Tape 27a)

38
He will rectify the whole world with his name: “Na Nach,” this is sufficient for the entire world.
(Tape 12a)

39
This name is all the Torah, and all the wisdom, and all the fear (of Heaven), and all… everything. [Visitor: And this makes a mitigation, this mitigates the judgments?] Certainly, every word (it) splits/pierces firmaments, it makes rectifications the likes of which never were ever, from the day of the creation of the world there was not a thing like this!
(Tape 51a)

40
Many people see awesome wonders, sick people who have not any hope, and they were cured through this Petek – they said, “Na Nach.”
(Sichos Saba 39 – made into a song on the Youtube: The Kamaya is a Major Thing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Hu8PzRKJco)

[1] See Likutay Moharan volume 2 Torah 7 that as long as people don’t have da’as (-holy realization of knowledge) and don’t know and feel His Divinity blessed He, and His dominion, they are not at all in the classification of people, since they don’t have da’as (-holy realization of knowledge) to know Hashem which is the main parameter of man, and therefore the world is considered to be in a state of void and oblivion etc..

Nanach on the Torah Portion of Mishpatim - references to all the original teachings of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov and his disciples

HH

Mishpatim – פרשת משפטים - Ordinances

And these are the ordinances:

The ordinances - “hamishpatim” this word with its seven letters has the numerical value (gematria) of: Na Nach Nachma Nachman MeUman!

To the court shall come the matter of both of them.

One who defects in business and does not bind his thoughts only to the Torah which is cloaked there, must come before judges who manifest and make from all of it Torah

Likutay Moharan, Torah-Lesson 280

Judges are called “Elohim” (an appellation for G-d) because they make Divine Torah from every matter

Three times in the year an appearance etc..

Israel would specifically go by foot and not by wagon, because the main tikun (rectification) of the Light of the Countenance of the Temple is drawn by the feet which need guarding from the cheetzoanim (“externals” - evil forces) which are close to the feet

Likutay Halachos, Laws of Divorce 4:10

The first of the first produce of your land bring to the House of Hashem your G-d, do not cook a goat in the milk of its mother.

Blossoms of the Spring - Letter 23

Letter 23

B.H., 6 Eyar 719 (Thursday, 14 May, 1959), Tiberius.

Loyal to my heart, Mr. Z. Shazar, prominently endowed with a lofty and precious neshama (-soul), whose heart uplifted him to tunnel and find the deep waters from which the faith grows[1] for every generation, fortunate is his lot. Shalom and abundant salvation.

It is incumbent on us to make a great Purim[2] with enormous joy every single day over the miracles, and the awesome wonders, wondrous wonders which Hashem wondrously did His kindness with us in these generations that we merited to be in the domain of the tzadik, the new light, novelty of novelties, awesome supreme wonder etc., who is the sole true leader of our generation, who looks and sees till the end of all the generations to raise them from apostasy ("shmad" = 344) to be desirable ("rutzoan" = 346), and to rectify them with the utmost rectification. Who draws such truth into the world which is the root of the tachlis (-utmost) of the absolute truth which is impossible to tarnish in any way, through which there is the essential nullification of the falsehood in its root, completely until the very last extremity![3]

The main elongation of the present bitter exile is due to the abundant division between (the Children of) Israel to the extent that they don't know where the true tzadik is who can bring joy to Israel (even) from the midst of the bitter exile, to shine in them the gleaming sparks of His Divinity blessed He which is the essential joy.[4] The true tzadik, chosen of the tzadikim, reveals and shines in the heart of a person very extremely deep aitzoas (-counsel), holy true aitzoas (-counsel) into the stark great darkness which intensifies and spreads over a person each time to make everything dark Heaven forbid, to merit through them to recognize the Creator blessed He, through the holy faith which is drawn through them.[5] The great tzadik who is the aspect of Moshe (-Moses), he draws Torah from such an awesome and supreme lofty place with such wondrous intellect, to the extent that his Torah has the power to revive and give life to all the souls who will engage in his Torah forever![6]

The Sitra Achruh (-Realm of Evil) and the Bal Duvur (-litigator-Satan) sets up in the world fraudulent leaders of the generation who boast of greatness and wonders, and mislead the world, as if there is nothing beyond them and everything is in their control, in order that through them, they (-everyone) should fall into the trap of the evil inclination. These charlatans are called false prophets![7]

When the falsehood will be rejected, and truth will gain strength and will be revealed in the world, and everyone will merit to know of the true Rebbe who will be publicized and revealed, through this, all will return to Hashem Yisburach, (and) even the nations of the world, and there will be one common vernacular to serve Him with one accord[8].[9]

When a person is very alienated from Hashem Yisburach, and there is he whose fall is so extremely great, and he descended to the depth of the depth of the nethermost abyss to the extent that it seems to him that it is no longer possible for him to draw close to Hashem Yisburach because he is distanced so much from Him through his bad conduct etc., even still when he strengthens himself nonetheless and seeks, and asks, and searches, and requests an aitzu (-counsel) and scheme to return to Him blessed He, then he merits that the descent is the tachlis (utmost, purpose) of ascent.[10] And the essential factor is according to his proximity to the true tzadik who is engaged in raising all those who fall and the very alienated from the Torah from where they are to the illumination of the supernal rutzoan (-will, desire)[11] by the power of his Torah, and his aitzoas (-remedies, counsel), and his holy hinting which are deep, and very extremely supreme without end or limit which never ever ceases.[12]

This is a great principle, that all the rectifications in the world are done only through the great tzadik (who is the) aspect of Messiah, and each and every one, according to how he surmounts to draw close to this tzadik, to incline his ear and his heart well to his (-the tzadik's) words (/matters) and to believe in him, so too he will get out each time from all the bad places in the world that he was repelled (there), and he (-the tzadik) will raise him and rectify him![13]

Hashem Yisburach devises schemes so that no reject will be rejected from Him (Samuel 2:14:14). And when He sees that a person is falling to a place exceedingly low and distant from the Torah, to the uttermost lowliness and baseness, and the Sitruh Achruh (-Other Side – Realm of Evil) and the impurity are very much spread over him and encompassing him from all sides and desire to consume him completely, Heaven forbid, Heaven forbid, specifically then Hashem Yisburach has mercy on him and sets about hints for him there in accordance to that place, and sets about some sort of merit that he can merit specifically in that distant place, and this is his test and free choice (-becheeruh). And if he merits there to remember of Hashem Yisburach and to do there what Hashem Yisburach hints to him wherever he is, he can return with ease to Hashem Yisburach.[14]

The tzadik who is of very great stature, who purified himself through and through, he doesn't die at all, because even after his passing he works at rectifying the souls of Israel more than in his lifetime, because then he rises each time to such lofty, wondrous, and exalted levels until he is able to rectify everything, because the essential rectification must be received from an exceedingly high place, and each person, the very more he vitiated, Heaven forbid, he needs to receive the rectification from an even higher and distant paradigm. To the extent that there are those who defected so much, particularly now in these generations, that it is impossible for them to be rectified except by the tzadik of exceedingly great stature, and the sicker he is – he needs a greater Rebbe, because this necessitates a great Rebbe and sage of true wisdom of superlative and very extremely enormous (/powerful) stature for him to know how to draw his (-the sinner's) rectification from a very lofty and distant paradigm in such a way that he can rectify a degenerate like him. And this is the aspect of (Jeremiah 31:2), "from afar Hashem appeared to me," specifically "from afar," (Aishes Chayil – Woman of Valor, end of Proverbs) "from afar she brings her bread (/provisions)," because the main rectification must be received from afar, from a paradigm very higher and distant from him. But the main thing is, that it is necessary to break many impediments before meriting to this, to draw close to this tzadik, because the impediments are many and extremely huge (/powerful) without limit, particularly the impediments there are from the mind (one's own imagination and preconception), that they don't believe in themselves that they can receive rectification, according to the enormity of the multitude of their vitiations each time without measure for many days and years. And even though they blame the degeneration on themselves, this is also an aspect of impediments of the mind, that they don't believe in the greatness of the kindnesses of Hashem Yisburach, which do not exhaust and do not deplete[15] ever, and in the greatness of the true tzadik who has the power to rectify everything each time whatever may be particularly after his passing for he rises each time to such formidable levels and draws wondrous new kindnesses each time, until all who desire to receive them can merit through him to be rectified even if he is the way he is even if he vitiated the way he vitiated, Heaven forbid.[16]

The main illumination of His glory blessed He in the world is just through the tzadik, who justifies the populace and endeavors to draw the alienated close and to return them to Hashem Yisburach, this being His main glory blessed He, and His glory is elevated and exalted in the world. Therefore, every person needs to strive hard to draw close those who are distant from Hashem Yisburach. Also, a person cannot say: "How can I draw close to Hashem Yiburach, when I am so far due to the multitude of my bad deeds." Because on the contrary, the more distant he is, the greater the glory of Hashem Yisburach will be exalted when he strives to return and to draw close to Him blessed He, because this is His main glory blessed He.[17]

The transcriber and organizer, who prays constantly every day for his wellbeing and his benefit with full heart, with miseeroos nefesh (-self-sacrifice). Soliciting his wellbeing and the wellbeing of all those in his company.

[2] Ullim Litroofuh, letter 171. A great Purim sometimes is a reference to when there is a Hebrew leap year and there are two months of Adar hosting the small Purim in the first, and the main celebrated big or great Purim in the second. Hence a "great Purim" would mean a full-fledged Purim. However, in this case it just means great tribute of the magnitude of Purim. It is interesting to note that the year 595, in which Rabbi Nussun used this term, was a regular year with only one Purim, whereas the year 719 in which Saba wrote this letter was in fact a leap year with both a small and a great Purim.
