Words of Rabbi Nachman - article 4 - money lots of money

4
Now, in these times, it is very, very difficult for a kosher person to have money, because it is necessary for him to have a very great descent Heaven forbid until he attains money. And even after the descent Heaven forbid from His devotion blessed He, still not everyone attains money. Because even the wicked and the frivolous (of the world), not everyone that teens money, however, a truly kosher person, it is extremely remote that he should have wealth.
Because know, that from the day the Temple was destroyed the wealth fell to the depths of the klipos (husks, exterior evil forces), in the aspect of: "and she fell wondrously {pla-im} (Lamentations 1:9)," 'pla-im' {wondrously} - are the letters 'alaphim' - thousands. That is, that the (monetary) thousands of wealth fell wondrously, that is, a great and wondrous descent. Therefore, it is ineluctable that he should have Heaven forbid a very great descent before coming to wealth[1], that is, thousands in cash, and it is still uncertain as explained above[2]. However, a truly[3] kosher person - it is extremely difficult for him to have wealth, and even though there are also found tzadikim and kosher people that have money[4], however, it is very, very onerous and difficult. And also, the wealth that the tzadikim have, it damages them, in their devotion[5]. Also, in reality, even though they have a little wealth, however, even still they do not have great wealth ready at their disposal as do the frivolous (of the world), who have thousands and tens of thousands of adumim (-a valuable gold coin) cash. Because now it is extremely difficult and onerous kosher people to have wealth as stated above.
And like they say in the name of my grandfather Rabbi Nachman[6] o.b.m., who said[7] on what our Sages o.b.m said (Shabbos 63a), "Length of days is on/with its (the Torah's) right (Proverbs 3:16)," and our Sages o.b.m. said, "Length of days there is, wealth and honor there isn't?" And they said: "All the more so (there is) wealth and honor!" And Rabbi Nachman (the grandfather of Rabbainu) o.b.m. said, that it is just an "all the more so," that is, that certainly it is an a fortiori and an 'all the more so' that they will have wealth and honor, however not explicitly[8]. Because even still they do not have ready at their disposal many thousands of adumim (-valuable golden coins), as explained above.

[1] Also when the Israelites came to Israel, some of the houses they conquered would be smitten with leprosy, the Zohar (Tazreya 50a) says that this was because the locals would verbally commit their possessions and work to idolatry in complete contradistinction to the very same holy practice that the Israelites had when building the Temple, that they would verbally consecrate everything. Thus the impurity of the leprosy is literally the aspect of the fallen holiness of the Temple. And thus, when the house with leprosy would be demolished, as commanded by the Torah, the Israelites would find the treasures the former inhabitants had hidden there.
[2] In the beginning of this article Rabbainu spoke of these times, yet when he came to give an explanation he based it upon the destruction of the Temple which was almost two thousand years ago. Perhaps the reader was meant to understand on his own that in these times we are suffering more than ever from the destruction of the temple.
There is a different way of understanding this, base on what the Ramchal revealed in Daas Tevunos, that HY has two ways of conducting the world. One is the way of reward and punishment, that righteous conduct is rewarded, and wicked conduct punished. If the world would only be run with this scheme there would not be free choice, because it would be so blatantly obvious and compelling to do what is right and abstain from anything else, like not jumping into a fire. The second way is that of the Unity of HY. In this scheme HY manifests His absolute unity, and does so by allowing for the development and galvanization of all the possible forces which have the illusion that they are outside of Gd, and He allows them to run their course and grow to their utmost, even as they can give the appearance that they are a stronger and more opposing force G-d forbid, and then HY will show how all this illusion of bad is in reality part of the goodness and unity of G-d, revealing the perfection of G-d’s oneness. The Ramchal writes that according to this scheme, specifically the righteous would be visited by all evils of the world, whereas the wicked would enjoy all that is good, and a person would really want to choose to suffer all the evils, knowing that they would be turned around to infinite eternal goodness when HY will reveal how it is all just One. This being almost the complete opposite of the first way, where the righteous is dealt just good, and the wicked dealt just bad. Hashem intertwines these two systems in a way that not even a prophet can figure out (see Klalim Rishonim 34. This is the paradigm of the Raisha Diloa Isyaada which was discussed in the notes to article 3, see there). Furthermore the Ramchal writes that in the end of the exile Hashem resorts more to the latter scheme, because there is a need then to bring a “tikkun klali” (throughout his works the Ramchal uses this term, which today is synonymous with Breslov and the ten Psalms Rabbainu selected) – a general comprehensive rectification to the whole world, and this is best done by the way of Unity, taking the greatest obscurity and reverting it to the greatest revelation which will bring the world to perfection, see there. Thus we see from the Ramchal that specifically at the end of exile Hashem will be favoring the conduct that withholds wealth from the righteous.
Perhaps the need to favor the way of Unity at the end of the exile is only because of the absence of the Temple, because with the presence of the Temple there are much less harsh ways of manifesting the absolute unity of G-d. Thus ultimately the reason why it is hard for the righteous to have wealth is because of the destruction of the Temple, which calls into play the need for much more conduct by the way of Unity, which is what Rabbainu says makes it altogether uncertain a person will attain wealth, and particularly in our times it is unlikely because since there is no Temple and we are at the end of the exile, there is the need to invoke the tikkun haklali as explained above.
[3] The inference here by “truly” is that someone who doesn’t have such a falling from holiness.
[4] In Likutay Moharan, Torah-teaching 200, Rabbainu addresses the fact that the tzadikim (-probably referring to the Chasidic masters) of the time were wealthy, and revealed that this is because in their previous lives they fulfilled the Torah in poverty, and the Mishna says, whoever keeps the Torah in poverty, in the end they will keep it with wealth, see there. It is possible that is what Rabbainu means here, “but it is very, very onerous and difficult,” because the whole scheme of reincarnation is known and termed as extremely difficult.
In our times it seems that there are kosher people who have vast wealth, this might already be evidence of the imminent rebuilding of the holy Temple (Also see the Mishna, Kaylim 1:6-9, there are ten holiness, the Land of Israel is holier than the other lands etc. etc., from here and other places we see that the holiness of the Land of Israel is the beginning of the holiness of the Temple, and being that there is thank G-d such a huge resurgence of Breslov today in Israel and Jerusalem, this itself is an aspect of the Temple being pulled out of its wondrous fall).
[5] See The Life of Our Leader Rabbi Nachman, articles 499-500 where Rabbainu spoke of the practice of many tzadikim of not keeping any money from one day to the next, and he praised highly this practice for simple folk (-even still he recommended otherwise, see there article 501), but he said that for the true Tzadik it is more virtuous and harder for him to hold on to money, as we see that our forefathers retained great wealth.
[6] Rabbi Nachman of Horedenka was one of the leading disciples of the holy Baal Shem Tov, his son, Rabbi Simcha married Faygeh, the daughter of Adel, the daughter of the Baal Shem Tov. These were the parents of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov. Thus, Rabbainu’s mother was a granddaughter of the Baal Shem Tov, and his father was the son of Rabbi Nachman of Horedenka. Rabbi Nachman of Horedenka visited the Holy Land for the third time in 524 (1764) and passed away there a year later, and he is buried in the old cemetery of Tiberias with other great Chasidic leaders. When Rabbainu made his pilgrimage to the Holy Land he was by his grandfather’s holy tomb.
[7] Brought down in Toldos Yaakov Yosef, Portion of Chukas.
[8] Toldos Yaakov Yosef words it this way, that from the power of the “all the more so” they will have the means to live well just like the wealthy, but they will not have all the extra wealth, see there (note also, that the Torah forbids a King to amass and retain wealth for show, just what is needed).

Wealth

HH

A person might have a lot of money, but it may be to his detriment, as the verse says (Koheles 5:12) However if a person is owed money by HY, then his money is sitting by HY, and then there is not question that he is truly a very wealthy man, because if his money is being held for him by HY it most certainly is for his utter benefit.

How does one put HY in his debt. The verse says מלוה ה' חונן דל, when one is gracious to the poor and destitute he is lending to HY.

May we all be truly wealthy.

Blossoms of the Spring - Letter 13

Letter 13

B.H., 24 Av 718 (Sunday, 10 August, 1958).

In honor of the apple of my eye, Mr. Z. Shazar, who looks expectantly to the tzadik and seeks his wisdom which is concealed[1] from all eyes and hidden, Shalom, and true life for lengthy days.

The time goes and rumbles, and runs, and flies exceedingly, and the body – it is possible that now its day has come. Be strong and courageous to flee with alacrity to the tzadik the true chuchum <sage> who is such a great expert doctor that he can remove all the ten types of arrows which the Samech Mem (-first two letters of the name of Satan) and his troops shot into our minds and our hearts, and heal us completely with the ten types of melody[2].

Most of the civilized world are extremely astray from the way of truth with all types of misleading, and contortions, and foreign ideas, and prevaricated reasoning of falsehood and error, and they err mamash (actually, very much so) in the dessert and straights of death, and not only that, they have no sentience whatsoever that they are straying in the dessert, but on the contrary, it seems to them that this is the main civilization.[3]

And behold the Baal Tefeeluh (Prayer Leader/Master – see the Legendary Tales of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, Story 12) whose every matter, and though, and deed was just for the true and eternal tachlis (purpose, end), and was always engaged in prayers, and songs, and praises to Hashem Yisburach, was situated outside of the habitat of civilization, except that he would frequently enter the habitat in order to draw people close to the service of Hashem Yisburach, and he would speak appealingly to their hearts at length such words of arousal until his words would enter their ears, and whoever reconciled with him, immediately he would lead him to his place that he had outside of the habitat, because most of the people of the habitat of civilization are extremely distant from the true tachlis (purpose, end). And all the conduct of the Bal Tefeeluh and his men were mamash the opposite of the customs of the civilized world, where most of them are drawn after the vanities of the world, and its delights and its desires, so therefore the place of the Baal Tefeeluh and his men was outside of the habitat.[4]

From the time the great storm wind completely mixed up and turned over the entire world from its true order, and all the people of the world were mixed up, and separated, and divided into various factions regarding the (philosophical) inquiry of what the tachlis (ultimate purpose, end) is, and they all strayed and got very extremely complexly lost through their bad desires which led them astray to alien fallacious views of folly and error. Some of them deviated errantly and they said that the main tachlis is honor – to overly chase after honor and to attain it, Heaven forbid, and they had indicative evidence, and proofs, and reasoning for this. And some said that the main tachlis is murder, and anger, and cruelty, and strength (-stoniness) of heart. And some said that the main tachlis is intercourse, and they also had many logical reasons for this. And so too all the factions which got very befuddled and went wrong in the matter of the tachlis, and each one of them had many logical reasons for their mistake, to the extent that it was possible to truly be mistaken in them. And more than all of them, they (-one faction) went wrong and they were very warped - the faction which chose for themselves that money is the tachlis, to the extent that they made money into idolatry and into an all out deity, Heaven forbid, and all hierarchy and importance by them was just according to the money, and someone who does not have but a little money, and particularly someone who is completely poor, isn't at all classified as human, according to the folly of their view. And fortunate is the holy faction whose view concurred to the real true tachlis, and they said that the main tachlis is just to engage in prayer and to be humble, and low key etc., and they chose for themselves the Baal Tefeeluh as king, for he was an extremely great and holy tzadik. And through the Baal Tefeeluh and his faction all the factions were rectified and extricated from their folly and mistakes, and they returned in repentance, and the entire world returned completely to the tachlis (paragon) of its rectification.[5]

The true tzadik who is the Baal Tefeeluh, who works to draw people close to Hashem Yisburach, resides with his men outside the habitat, that is, because all his residing and his conduct are certainly the complete opposite of the ways of the habitat of civilization whose activity for the most part is void, and they chase after the excesses, and are taken up in the vanities of the times. However, the tzadik and his men are completely distant from all this, and suffice with what they have, and particularly in regard to clothing and garments they are not fastidious whatsoever, and it is like they reside totally outside the habitat of civilization mamash, in all their views and their behavior, and they engage just in prayer, and songs, and praises to Hashem Yisburach, and repentance, and confessions, and fasting etc.. And by these men all the great devotions of the service of Hashem, which most of the world consider to be a very difficult ordeal to accept upon themselves such devotion, but to them all this is more precious than all the exquisite delights of the world, because they have exquisite delight from a severe mortification or from a fast and so forth more than all the delights of the world. However, even though they reside outside the habitat, even still they come in to the habitat every time in order to draw more people close to the service of Hashem Yisburach.[6]

There are such foods (probably they are spiritual), that when one merits to eat and taste from these foods, one immediately casts away the desire for money, and perceives the utter stench of money, which is putrid like actual excrement, to the extent that one is extremely embarrassed with the money, and the money is the greatest shame of all shame, and whoever has more money is more embarrassed, and also the lower echelons and those lacking money are also ashamed of themselves for being so small in their own eyes because of the lack of money, because now it is revealed to them that on the contrary, the money is the main embarrassment. And therefore the wealthy are more overly embarrassed, and they hide themselves in the underground hollows from the magnitude of the shame that everyone is ashamed before his friend, to the extent that they cannot lift their faces whatsoever because of the shame, because these foods have in them this segooluh (-propitious property) that through them people abhor money with absolute abhorrence, and they cast away their idolatrous silver and idolatrous gold, as it will be in the future.[7]

The transcriber, who mentions him (in prayer) for benefit always, and supplicates for his well-being and his success.

The Righteous Suffer

HH
The Ramchal in Daas Tevunos explains that there are 2 ways HY runs the world. 1 is by virtue of reward and punishment. 2 is according to the grand master plan to reveal His Perfect Unity. In order that His unity is revealed completely, evil is given full opportunity to do what it can, and then HY shows how therefore in reality even the evil is for the good.
The Ramchal says that if HY would run the world solely with #2, all the righteous would be suffering and the wicked would be thriving. To the extent that o e would pick the suffering to merit the infinite macro reward. But since there is also #1, so no one could ever know why a given person is suffering or thriving.
The Ramchal also says that as the coming of the Messiah approaches HY more and more is running the world with #2.
That means that the chances are that if a person is righteous he will be suffering HY.
This brings to mind what Rabbainu said that nowadays we don't find kosher people with exaggerated wealth, to come to such wealth one has to fall deep in the tuma RL. Writing with my thumbs here without a computer it is too difficult for me to develop this.

The media says that 1% of the population possesses 50% of the wealth

HH

If this is true about the material, how much more so it holds true with the spiritual world! The tzaddikim have more holiness than everyone put together.

[The Yaaros Devash of R' Yonatan Eibshitz explains the phenomena of Hurculeas, that they channeled the strength destined for any entire population into one person.

Our sages revealed that Moses was the equivalent of all 600,000 Jewish souls]
