What demons? The Rambam paskened that they do not exist!

Last night at the Rambam's shrine, in honor of his hilula, we had a little snack as is customary, and in our little get together we talked of a certain Nanach who had done some major segufim (self flagellation) until he began to see some of the demons that accompany people, and he began to refuse to have any dealings therefore with many people. In the middle of this one of the Nanach pointed out that the Rambam wrote that there are no such thing as demons! So I told them what is said in the name of the Vilna Gaon that obviously the Rambam did not deny the existence of demons, what he wrote was a halachic edict, a halacha of the revealed Torah to establish that no demon could have any appearance or status in the revealed world. So in the merit of the Rambam may our friend be spared the visions of the demons....

פנה אל השם והוא יתברך פונה מכל עסקיו אליך

שיחות הר"ן ע: ענה ואמר: היתכן שאנו מניחין את השם יתברך שיעשה ויחשב לגזר גזרות בעולם? (כי אז באותו הזמן נשמע שיוצאין גזרות על ישראל חס ושלום). כי אנו צריכין לקרות את השם יתברך מעסקיו שהוא עוסק בהם באיזה גזרה וכיוצא חס ושלום, לקרות אותו משם שישליך זאת ויפנה אלינו למה שאנו רוצים לדבר עמו לבקש ממנו שיקרב אותנו לעבודתו יתברך. כי כשאחד מישראל רוצה לדבר עם השם יתברך לפרש שיחתו לפניו יתברך, אזי השם יתברך משליך כל עניניו וכל הגזרות שרוצה לגזר חס ושלום וכל העסקים שלו שהוא יתברך עוסק בהם כביכול, והוא משליך הכל ופונה עצמו רק לזה האיש שרוצה לדבר עמו ולפרש שיחתו לפניו לבקש מאתו שיעזרהו להתקרב אליו יתברך:

דבר זה מבואר בספר אדיר במרום (רמב-ג) ז"ל ותיקון לזה הלב בדרך זה הוא ענין התפלה, כי העיקר בתפלה הוא כוונת הלב, ואז ניתן הלב להקב"ה. כי הלא באותו הזמן מסירים ההבנה מכל ענין אחר, ומישרים אותה אל הקב"ה לבד, כי צריך להסיר כל המחשבות. אך ענין התפלה לבוא לשאול דברים מה ששואלין מלפני המלך. ונמצא שהיא הסרת ההבנה משאר הדברים, והישרתה אל המלך לקבל הדברים שמבקשים. ואפילו התורה איננה כך, כי אין הכוונה שם אלא לדעת. אבל כאן לוקחים למבט חסד הקב"ה, ונמצא שאליו היא הכוונה בכל השאלות ששואלים ממנו. ועל כן גורמת תיקון זה ממש, שהלב העליון ילקח מהז"א, ויהיה כולו פונה אליו ומנושא ממנו, ואז אין הס"א שולטת עוד ומסיר ממנו העצבון, וע"ש כל דבריו הקדושים.

When a Jew desires to speak with Hashem Yisburach, to express his words before Him blessed He, and to ask from Him that He should draw him close to His service blessed He, then Hashem Yisburach so to speak throws aside all His affairs, and all the edicts that He wishes to decree Heaven forbid, and all His engagements that He blessed He is involved in, so to speak, and He casts everything aside and turns Himself to attend just to this person who desires to speak with Him, and express his words before Him to request from Him that He help him to draw close to Him blessed He. The upshot is, that through this the natural result is that the Jews are saved from all harsh decrees, may the Merciful One save us.
