In the very first Torah-teaching of Likutay Moharan, Rabbi Nachman revealed that the goal and intent of our evil inclination - yetzer hura - isn't just to get us to sin or be immoral Gd forbid, rather it is to literally make us insane, may HY save us.

This explains a lot of what is going on today, the insanity, dementia, drugs, alcohol etc..
